Problem with continuous sync

Hi all

I have a HP iPAQ h4150, Windows XP Pro, Outlook 2002 SP3, ActiveSync 3.7.1, with Synchronization set to "continuously."

When I make a change in Outlook, it does NOT immediately sync. If I click "synchronize" the change ALSO does not immediately update.

If I open "options" then close it, or remove and replace the device in the cradle, proper sync does occur (although it is a full sync).

I tried running Help -> Detect and Repair in Outlook, and also tried reinstalling ActiveSync, but the problem still exists.

I recently installed Norton Antivirus 2004 Professional and I suspect the problem is being cause by this antivirus software, however I haven't heard of any conflicts between this product and Activesync, and surely there are many others running this combination. FYI, I'm also running ZoneAlarm Pro (latest version) and SpySweeper 2.6 (version 3.0 is crap).

I would appreciate any info, as I want to try and avoid uninstalling Norton because the re-installation process takes quite a while. Although I will as a last resort.

Re: Problem with continuous sync

I've suspected my Norton of causing similar problems. I've found that I
can't continuous sync if I'm online. When I need to sync I log off for a few
minutes. Try it and see if it works for you.

Thanks for the reply JD.

I haven't tried what you suggested, but since my last post I've tried a few other things.

I was not happy with NAV 2004 Pro for a number of reasons including this one, so I'm going to try and get a refund, and in the meantime I purchased Mcafee Viruscan 8 and installed it. After un-installation of NAV, the problem above still existed, and after installation of Mcafee, the problem still existed.

I've narrowed the problem down to ZoneAlarm Pro, but I can't tell whether it's a problem with ZoneAlarm itself, or a combination of ZoneAlarm and the Antivirus installations (I don't remember having the problem with ZoneAlarm before installing NAV). When ZoneAlarm is removed from the system, the problem goes away.

JD, do you have ZoneAlarm installed by any chance?

Re: Problem with continuous sync

ZoneAlarm is probably prohibiting ActiveSync from doing it's
job correctly. ActiveSync uses TCP/IP to sync with and keep
your PPC online when it is cradled, and therefore needs to
have unrestricted access when it comes to being 'online'.
It's not sending your personal stuff across the internet, it
is synchronizing data with your computer and with whatever
internet-enabled application you installed on your PPC.

Re: Problem with continuous sync

Dawsman,

No, I don't have zone alarm installed.

As for NAV 2004, it is quite buggy and it caused my old laptop to finally
bite the dust. NAV 2004 definitely has issues and I'm convinced that it is
causing my sync problems. And even once you uninstall NAV 2004, pieces of it
lurk in your system. So, you never quite get rid of it.

I think I'll go to the Norton site and see if there are any tips on how to
handle active sync.

I thought ACE provided some good information as well. Seems my TCP/IP
settings are getting screwed up with Norton. If I stay online and reinstall
active sync it will work, while Norton keeps popping up asking how to set
rules. But as soon as I restart the computer, I can no longer sync if I'm
online.

Thank you

Thanks for the info guys.

I'm convinced that NAV 2004 screwed up my ZoneAlarm setup now, based on the info from Janet (JD above).

I have now discarded NAV 2004 (as I said previously), and I have also (reluctantly) uninstalled ZoneAlarm and have installed McAfees integrated firewall software, which so far seems to be really good, and I like the idea of having integrated AntiVirus/Firewall software. McAfee also runs as if it isn't even there, whereas Norton caused noticeable lag on my two computers (Laptop: P4-M 1.7GHz 512Mb RAM and Desktop: P4-2.4GHz 256Mb RAM) although I can't be sure whether or not this was caused by a conflict with ZoneAlarm.

So, thanks for your help, and I'll end with a warning with respect to NAV 2004, and a recommendation to seriously consider McAfees AntiVirus/Firewall solution.

Although I had removed Norton Antivirus 2004 long before installing
ActiveSync, I suspect it is your problem. I had many problems after
installing the Norton 2004 product. I removed it, re-installed the 2003
version and all my problems went away.

Re: Problem with continuous sync

First, Norton asking for 'rules' is not NAV, it is
Norton Personal Firewall OR Norton Internet Security.
either way, this is a firewall, and if it blocks TCP/IP
for ActiveSync either by not setting rules or by accidently
denying access and making this permanent, or by ignoring
Norton IS's request what to do about the rules.

Fast and simple, just let Norton either do the rules automatically
(Which works fine here, it configured itself automatically without
user intervention) or set it to allow ALL traffic and make the
changes permanent. Norton will remember this through all it's updates.
Should you reinstall ActiveSync, Norton -might- ask you to re-enter
the rule for ActiveSync, or not at all if it was previously set.

If you need any help getting Norton IS or PF set up right with
ActiveSync you can either contact me here or through email.

I seem to have the same problem with my H4150. However, there is one difference; my battery is fully charged.
