View Full Version : Is there ANY decent web browser for WM 6.1?
Michael Moser 03-25-2009, 04:32 PM I have an HTC Touch HD which in principle is a terrific machine (fast, thin, big screen, lots of memory, etc.) but that thing is UNUSABLE for actual Web browsing.
My estimation is, that neither PIE nor the pre-installed Opera mobile are able to render more than maybe 10% of all webpages somewhat useful. Since their mutual subsets only partially overlaps, with those two browsers one can actually use maybe 15% of all webpages out there.
The remaining 85% are not useable for Windows Mobile devices. These pages don't show properly, mostly only partially, sometimes even not at all. Or if they are shown they are a mess or can't be operated. If she's with me I can at least ask my wife: "could you please look up that URL on your iPhone please? I again can't get this page to show properly on my device". And on her iPhone most pages almost always display without the slightest problem. She then always teases me, why I don't buy an iPhone, too.
It's so embarrassing and such a pain and regularly drives me really mad! I hate the iPhone due too many lacking feature and especially Apple's attitude on locking you in completely and controlling what you are allowed to do or not, but their browser alone will soon make me switch! Esp. in the light, that they are now apparently also starting to open that thing up a bit more...
I have been using about 10 different high-end Windows CE devices over the last 15 years or so and I suffered uncountable bugs and hickups and instabilities. We are now in 2009 and MS is still incapable of delivering a web browser for Windows CE/Mobile that's at least marginally useful! I find this unbelievable and unacceptable! I am more and more feeling the desire to ditch Windows Mobile altogether...
Or is there ANY decent alternative browser, that one could suggest as replacement and/or additional browser for WM 6.1?
Michael
Perhaps, this free web browser is fit for you - UCWeb
(http://www.ucweb.com/) .
As I know, so many people use it as default web browser for their HTC Touch
HD device.

Most of my browsing is split between Opera Mini (not Mobile), which does
a good job with most web pages, and renders very quickly (it runs
everything through Opera's servers, so Opera does most of the "heavy
lifting,") and Skyfire, which supports flash video, and works with TV
websites. Skyfire is a little slow to render, so it's my backup for what
Opera Mini doesn't handle well.

Their download page offers 15+ brands and dozens if not hundreds of phones for each to choose from, but HTC (and thus the Touch HD) is not among them.
Alas I also didn't find those devices from Ericsson and Samsung in the list that I know to run WM 6.1 with a similar screen resolution. And there is no generic WM version, either.
Any suggestions, which of those versions to download for the Touch HD?
Michael
In Chinese version of this download page, I can see download copy for HTC
Touch HD. But in English one, this web does not supply choice for HTC.
You may try these URLs:

http://wap.ucweb.com/u3899/p
Good luck to you.

Clinton Fitch, MVP-Mobile Devices 03-26-2009, 07:44 AM Hello,
I think you will find that the vast majority of Windows Mobile users would
agree with your frustration.
In my opinion there is not one browser out there that fits the bill 100%.
Pocket IE has it's strengths, Opera Mobile and Mini have their strengths,
SkyFire, etc. They all have weaknesses though and it is more or less a
matter of which weakness you can live with more than another. Fortunately
all of these browsers mentioned in this thread are free or have a trial
period. Give them a try and see which one fits your needs best.
As for me (since we are all sharing!), I use Pocket IE along with Spb Pocket
Plus which gives me multi-tab functionality. For what I do it fits the need
90% of the time.

Can you please give one such problem web page as an example? I'm very
happy with the current Opera Mobile Beta (9.5). Sometimes pages are
loading very slowly, but most of the sites work (apart from Flash and
ActiveX, but these won't work on the iPhone, neither).

Werner \Menneisyys\ Ruotsalainen [MVP - Windows - Mobile Devices] 03-31-2009, 11:08 AM Every Web browser out there has its strengths and weaknesses. I'd say
there's no clear winner, particularly not on the HD, where you'll surely be
frustrated with low-res (QVGA)-only solutions like SkyFire. Personally, I'd
go for either Opera Mobile or Mini.

Michael Moser 04-02-2009, 05:49 PM Thanks all for responding!
Opera Mini 9.5 beta seems indeed a bit more usable. I have at least much less problems with it than with the built in PIE and the Opera Mini version that's pre-installed on the HD (and is apparently "specially adapted" for the HD).

Werner \Menneisyys\ Ruotsalainen [MVP - Windows - Mobile Devices] 04-07-2009, 05:28 AM Which version / build did you install? There're quite a few of them; I've
thorouhly compared them in my below-linked article. Since then, there may be
newer build releases; see

Mine reads 2682, which according to your table looks pretty old but was the latest the download page had available.
