View Full Version : New size SD and CF memory in a Dell Axim x5
TBerk 07-05-2008, 01:20 AM The main web sites I have found for this older unit seem to cover a
lot of ground on SD cards in the megabyte range but now a days we can
get 1, 2, 4Gig and more in the same form factor.
(Man, I'm writing this on the 4th and the neighborhood sounds like
Iraq right now)
Anyway, I'm working with a system w/o a USB cable or dock to sync w/.
I'm looking to transfer some Wifi drivers over via a memory card but
this isn't turning out to be the slam dunk I initially thought it
might be.
Any help with
A) How big/small are the limits on this for SD RAM?, & CF as well.
B) If you couldn't sync via USB nor IR (infrared) then how might you
get a Dell CF wifi card up and recognized?
Thx,
TBerk

I don't have mine any more, but I used up to 128MB CF cards in it.
CF is pretty forgiving. I'm using a 4GB card in an old Jornada 520.
That significantly predates the X5.
Make sure your card is formatted for the pda. Some cameras and mp3
players format cards
such that it's impossible to reformat them without special programs.
Windows can reformat them and they look ok in the PC, but won't work in
a PDA. I know you probably don't believe it...I didn't either.
I have an old mp3 player that I keep around just because it has a utility
that can put any Smart Media card back into factory setting so it can
then be
reformatted where you need to use it. Not sure if this affects CF.
XP won't let you format a large card FAT16 using normal procedures.
Try an older computer, boot a ME diskette, formatting utility.
This is a completely different issue from the mp3/camera issue above.
Another thing that happens is that people drop the pda with a cf accessory
installed and break the connector. I've had to resolder the pins on more
than one camera.
I use IR for most small xfers. The X51v IR will talk to most any
windows or palm pda.
Try to borrow a small card and be done with it.
If you go outside your front door with a sign that says, "need a 64MB
flash card", and make a sound like the garbage truck coming thru, you'll
probably be covered with 'em in a few minutes.

Don Schmidt 07-05-2008, 02:15 AM You best refer to the spec sheet on your unit.
I recently got an ASUS MyPal A639 which out of the box has a max SD card
size of 2 GB but you can load a patch to increase it to a 4 GB SD card.
This I have done and it works well with the pile of map files for the GPS
program. One drawback is if a reboot is encountered, the patch program
needs to be re-run.

My understanding is that being unable to format on the destination is a
uniquely Smartmedia experience, the obvious filesystem limitations
(which can be fixed with a format on the target device) not
withstanding.

My X51 uses both SD and CF cards and I often remove them to transfer
large MP3 + vid files via the media reader on my PC(XP) and even use the
SD card in other devices inc. my Blaupunkt car unit.
My 4 year old canon camera also uses the Cf and I've swapped them
between the PC, PDA and camera to transfer/view files without any probs.

smartmedia <shudder>
and XD is not far behind. cards not compatible with one another, nor
certain readers - not a well developed media at all
Beverly Howard [Ms-MVP/MobileDev] 07-05-2008, 12:10 PM On older ppc's there should be no problem with large cf cards as it uses
a standard pcmcia bus... I have never seen any post related to problems
with large capacity CF cards.
_however_ the SD slot will be limited to 2Gig... the SDHC was introduced
after the X5, so, SDHC cards will not work in the X5... note, that is a
hardware limit.
I'm currently using a 4g CF and 2g SD in my X5 which is my "It's Not a
Pod" music player.

Amen.

Luckily it licensed itself into obsolescence, just a few vendors are a
bit slow on the uptake.

Not necessarily - only in about half of the pre-SDHC models (for example,
the iPAQ hx4700, HTC Wizard etc - see my SDHC Compliance Bible).
However, I yet need to see a WM2003-compatible SDHC driver (the x5 can only
be upgradded to WM2003 and not to WM5+). Dunno if it exists - a quick search
at XDA-Devs may be handy.

OK, so far here is what I have found;
- The x5 sees and seems to work well with a 1G CF card I was able
borrow from a photographer friend.
- The 1G SD card I have in my own point and shoot Digicam has been
(WinXP) formatted to FAT(16), it now works as well. (Yeah!)
- A copy/paste from CF to SD went well, about M.
Now, the only thing (worthy of a new thread), is to see if I can
manually tuck the whole contingent of 11b drivers, etc into the
Windows version of this beastie.
'tank you everybody.
