View Full Version : How do I upgrade my HP iPAQ to WM5 or WM6.x?
Mark Vozzo \(CXC\) 06-27-2008, 01:00 AM I would like to upgrade my HP iPaq H5550 from Pocket PC 2003 to Windows
Mobile 5 or 6.x.
Has anyone done this successfully and if so, can some please advise how to
do it?
Regards, Mark

To expand a bit on an earlier reply:
Upgrades for the Windows CE operating system and platforms (like
Pocket PC) built on it are controlled entirely by OEMs (Original
Equipment Manufacturers) and a few big resellers (phone companies,
iMate, and a few others). They are the only legal sources for
upgrades. In your case, if HP doesn't have an upgrade, you have no
legal options.

Dustin Harper 06-27-2008, 10:35 AM Check with HP first. It's the only legal way to do it. Although, it's
probably possible, check the http://forum.xda-developers.com website. Do
note that if you update, your performance MAY be degraded (should change
that to probably will!).

Actually, he should be:
a) not upgrading
b) downgrading
I recently resurrected my old hp1940 as a music player*. I was surprised
how pleasant it was to use in some respects compared to my Dell X51. PPC
2003 was a very good system. WM5 wasn't that big an improvement, and as
you say, some of the 'improvements' were typical MS featureitits with bloat.

Jack Tingle
*I bought the Dell because the digitizer on the 1945 has a terminal case
of spiking when you write on it. That doesn't affect the music playing.

I still use my iPaq 3670. It has a mempad sleeve with two CF slots and extra
battery. A Haicom GPS uses one CF slot, but also has it's own SD slot. I can
substitute a Wifi card for the GPS and pick up my emails and surf the web.
I usually have all my maps on the SD card and a 2 Gig CF with music that I
can play through the car's stereo. I use iGuidance for road navigation and
Fugawi for marine.
This is not for everyone, but it does everything I need it to.
Only problem I now have is that new versions of iGuidance are needed for
updated mapping, and these are not designed to run on PPC2002. Apparently
iGuidance 3.02 will (might) run, but I have not been able to get a copy to
try it.
To replace this unit, I would need to buy an iPod, an all-in-one GPS and a
chart plotter! Or maybe, one of the newer iPaq would do all of this?

While finding a multi-slot device (2 CF or CF/SD) is harder these days,
they're also less necessary since much of the I/O we used CF slots for is
built in. My AT&T Tilt phone has only one slot (for flash memory), but has
Wi-Fi, bluetooth, and GPS built-in.
Even if you avoid PPC phones, there are a few WiFi/BT/GPS devices
available, or, if you stay with iPaqs, even a single-slot WiFi/BT model can
use a small BT GPS module.

Alas, all the good phones have cameras. That's a deal breaker for a lot
of people.
Regards,
Jack Tingle
A number can be had without a camera. My Tilt was purchased sans camera,
from AT&T. In retrospect I'm sorry I did that. Most places I go that don't
allow the camera, don't allow the phone either, so it stays in the car
anyway.
