View Full Version : backup with WM6?

John Bartos

It seems that the backup function on Sync Center does not work with WM6
Professional. I have a Verizon VZ6800. Is that true and is there a work
around? Sure would be nice to have a backup, just in case.

WMDC does not have a backup/Restore tool. Unless you're connecting a
WM2003 device.

Thanks. Doesn't that seem like a step backward? Is there any 3rd party or
work around to allow this? Thanks.

Yes! I assume the Current theory is that since WM5/6 devices have a
permanent storage memory (not erased if the batteries did like older PPCs)
Backups are less critical. (Which, in a way, is true- assuming you sync
with Activesync and Outlook, your PIM data, files, favorites, etc. are
"backed up" constantly by syncing. Even 3rd-party apps, if installed with
Activesync's add/remove programs function can be easily reinstalled in one
step after a disaster.)

Sure- Sprite Software and SPB sell backup utilities for $30 US or so.

There are several third party backup tools; SKTools, Sprite Backup, Spb
Backup and Sunnysoft Backup being the most important. See my backup-related
articles and my Backup Bible on my blog for a thorough comparison.

As stated by Todd and werner said, your only options are third party
applications.

But there is no add/remove programs function in the new Sync Center. Thanks
for the info. Maybe this whole backup concept is something MS needs to
rethink. I haven't had it happen, but surely the day will come when I have
to do a hard reset and then, back to square one.

Sync Center does very little for you in regards to WM devices. It is sort of
a dashboard to display status. You will need to load Windows Mobile Device
Center (WMDC), downloadable from MS's Mobile site, to actually do any
synchronization with a WM device. It may not be entirely obvious you need
something else, because Vista does recognize WM devices out of the box,
allow you to navigate them and transfer files back and forth. To create a
partnership and do actual synchronization requires WMDC.

For adding programs, just run the program installer and it will operate
WMDC's add software automatically.

For removing software, you can always do it on the device itself....

Sorry to barge-in but I am also inconvenienced by the exclusion of a
backup/restore facility. My old WM 2003 based PDA died so I updated to a WM 6
PDA. All my contacts, calendar items, etc are in a .pbf backup file and I can
not transfer them.

Does anyone have any suggestions ? My old PDA is dead so I can not sync
through Outlook...

Thanks

Truly mind boggling on Microsoft's part -- forget about my fleet of PDAs
using third party software that relies on Activesync backup to transfer data
back and forth between shifts. Anyone know where I can buy PDAs with an old
enough ROM to use Activesync 3.7? Otherwise our mobile app is dead in the
water.

Good luck. You'll need pre-WM5 PDAs. That'll limit you to devices roughly
3 years old or older. FWIW, you can still use newer versions of Activesync
with those older PPCs, since AS 4.x emulates 3.8 (including the backup
function) when a pre-WM5 device is docked.

Depending on the number of PDAs you'd have to replace, might it not make
sense to have the app rewritten to support a different transfer method? I'm
no programmer, but I've used a good number of software programs on a good
number of Windows-based mobile devices and never saw a single app that used
the backup function to sync data with a PC (other than the backup utility
itself.) Changing the to app to write the data file(s) currently being
backed up via the backup function to a specific subfolder of the PPCs' "My
Documents" folder (so it would sync via the Files sync function) wouldn't be
too difficult to pull off, would it?

However, to answer your question as asked, other than the "usual suspects"
(eBay, Craigslist, etc.) you might try http://www.usedhandhelds.com- it's a
trusted source of older handhelds by the good folks at Thaddeus Computing
who publish Smartphone and Pocket PC Magazine. They currently, for example,
have the WM2003SE-based HP 2415 for $160.
