View Full Version : why cant I sync certain info?
No Spam 12-07-2007, 08:52 PM I have an 8525 with WM 6.
I am trying to sync to Vista's Windows Calendar and Windows Contacts
using the Windows Mobile Device Center but it won't let me select
those options. it only lets me sync favorites, files, and pics/albums
and none of the other things.
How come?
TIA
Because WMDC doesn't support Vista Window Calendar and Contacts. It supports
Outlook, just as AS supported Outlook. Just the way it is.

You cannot sync them yet. The windows mobile team are working on it for a
future release but as yet you can only sync with outlook.

Really? Hmm. Seems kind of silly to me Calendar and Contacts and
Mobile Device Center all came on my computer but they don't work with
each other. And I need Outlook, which it the computer didn't come
with. Why bother even giving me the new Calendar and stuff if I can't
use it.

We used to say the same thing about Outlook Express which came with XP and
didn't work with Activesync...

Because not everyone owns a PPC?
The problem here is with newer WinMo devices. At one time, a copy of
Outlook used to be included with all WinMo devices, but apparently that's
no longer the case.
Depending on your needs, you could buy Outlook, or you could buy a hoste
Exchange account ($7/month at 1&1.com) which includes Outlook and also
lets you sync PIM data over-the-air wherever you have an internet connection.
Optionally, you can get a free Exchange account at mail2web.com but it
doesn't include Outlook software- instead you get access to OWA (Outlook
Web Access) which is a web-based version of Outlook that works in your
browser (which is slower than a desktop version, obviously, and means you
have no access to your PIM data if you don't have internet access.)

Thing is that I use gmail so any mail features are wasted on me. All I
want to sync is Calendar and Contact info.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Unfortunately I don't think anyone is going to have any thoughts. Contacts
and Calendar are a new thing with Vista. With XP and AS you could have an
assortment of different PIM apps on the desktop, and there were some third
party options to sync them. Intellisync was one such program that supported
Outlook Express and even Palm Desktop. I don't think any third party
programs have appeared that support third party PIMs on Vista/WMDC yet. If
they do it would behoove them to support Windows Calendar and Contacts. if
the WMDC team is indeed working on support, great, but I wouldn't hold my
breath.
At this point in time, I think the only viable solution is Outlook on the
desktop.

I'd still say go with the free mail2web.com account and ignore the e-mail.
(Or use it for other purposes- since it's "push" e-mail you can use it with
Callwave.com's Visual Voicemail service, for example.)
Personally, I think WMDC will eventually be re-written to sync with Mail
and Calendar. In the past, PPCs always included an "obsolete" version of
Outlook, to give sync functionality without cannibalizing sales of the
current version of Outlook. The problem now (for MS) is that the usual
"included versions" (Outlook 2000 or 2k2) aren't fully compatible with Vista,
so their "solution," rather than including Outlook 2003 (still a $100+
current product,) was to no longer include Outlook. My _guess_ is that
they intended to support Mail and Calendar, but deadlines being what they
are, along with other bugs and problems with WMDC, forced that plan to be
"back-burnered" for now.
Unfortunately for now, that means you're stuck with using Outllok or
Exchange.
