View Full Version : Pocket PC, NT 4.0 and ActiveSync

I have a problem and wonder if anyone can help. I am trying to use my
IPAQ 3780 at work and set up a sync there. However due to the fact
that my IT desk are so out-of-date and useless, they have said they
only provide Sync software for palm, and no they certainly cannot give
me admin status to install anything on my desktop!
Anyway in a nutshell, is there any way to install ActiveSync on my PC
at work without getting "you don't have the privilege" messages (I
have tried to install ActiveSync 3.6, but no good)

Many Thanks

The Bon

Don't even bother trying to install ActiveSync on your NT machine. NT 4.0
does not support USB and therefore ActiveSync is useless.

Pocket PC's support serial and AS 3.5 works just fine on NT.

No. You must be an administrator to install ActiveSync and then you
need a serial cradle.

Find someone in IT with a clue. Giving you local admin rights won't
damage anything.

Seems to be a common problem at many companies, getting IT to actually
address the needs of the users. I do want to add that we have at least one
good person in our IT group.

You wil need to find somoene in IT that will up your privileges on the PC to
install ActiveSync. Sorry but there is no "easy" way around this security
feature in Windows NT.

Good luck!

Actually there are third party solutions for USB on Windows NT version 4.0.
Also, ActiveSync supports IR and standard RS-232 serial communications
links.

AAArrrrgghh!!! Heresy! Heresy! Kill! Pesecute!

Don't you know that giving local admin rights to a user will mean
they'll instantly start downloading and installing all sorts of
software that will immediately destroy the user's machine, the company
network and, finally, the whole world.

At least that's the story our IT morons are spreading as they try to
make it against the rules for anybody to have local admin rights.

What's wrong with them perfoming regular audits to ensure workers
don't have 'the wrong sort of software' installed?
Doh! Stupid me. That would mean the IT morons having to stop playing
Unreal Tournament for 5 minutes while they do some real work.

Do I detect a note of sarcasm? :-)

Well, got a update from the IT (Un)Service desk at work after I
offered to install the original software of mine if they lifted the
bloody admin lock for a while. Guess what, they first said that no
they couldn't as you may need a license (which I said no, as I have
the original software and anyway ActiveSync was provided on the
microsoft website) and then after that, they said I had to raise the
matter with "My customer group representative" to raise a work
package. Two points. My CGR is a Board Director for the company, I
basically rank as pondlife in the company and secondly "work package"
to a outsourced IT like us means "Give us Cash...lots of it"
Grrr......
