View Full Version : Backing up WM6?
Used to have a WM2003SE device, but recently got a WM6 unit. What is the
best software for backing up this version of windows?
Used to use Sprite Backup before....
Thanks
Eric
Werner \Menneisyys\ Ruotsalainen [MVP - Windows - Mobile Devices] 09-30-2007, 01:15 PM Sprite Backup (version 6) is probably the best and most versatile, albeit
the most expensive and still has no real trial version.
If you don't want to pay for an app without a trial, make sure you give Spb
Backup, SKTools and / or Sunnysoft's app a try. They all are pretty capable
and MUCH cheaper, albeit a bit less featureful backup apps with 100% trial
versions.
Also make sure you check out my Backup Bible, where I've compared all these
apps.

Is there a real need for backup on WM 5.0? I make all changes on the
desktop, sync to the WM 5.0 device. So the original data stays on
the desktop and is backed up on the desktop. (I got into the habbit
of doing this religiously when Money would act up on a regular basis.)
On the rare occasion when I do make a change/note on the ppc I copy it
over to the desktop so it will be backed up. I also have the
originals for the ppc programs on the desktop which also get backed
up regularly. So do I still need a ppc backup program?

Werner \Menneisyys\ Ruotsalainen [MVP - Windows - Mobile Devices] 09-30-2007, 02:52 PM I'd say there is - if you want to "roll back" to a previous state or a rogue
app messes up your device completely.

I don't have to worry about that, don't plan on adding any new
software in the foreseeable future. No room to put it.
Ipaq 2495 with very little space left.
Werner \Menneisyys\ Ruotsalainen [MVP - Windows - Mobile Devices] 10-01-2007, 02:30 AM Well, you can always swap in a bigger memory card - and all you need to do
is copying over the old files from the old card to the new ;)

Don't use memory cards. They drain the battery too fast.
Never got the fix to work.

Agreed except that it would be really nice to have a back up of all my
settings - tioday, wifi, email etc etc
Clinton Fitch, MVP-Mobile Devices 10-01-2007, 08:51 PM Eric,
Sprite Backup or Spb Backup both work well in my view.

Considering how immensely more useful a memory-card makes my Pocket PC, this
is a price I'll gladly pay :-)

Werner \Menneisyys\ Ruotsalainen [MVP - Windows - Mobile Devices] 10-02-2007, 06:01 AM Xena has referred to the major bug in the iPAQ 2xxx series, which renders
the entire series pretty much useless (or, at least, a major pain to use):
when you leave the memory cards in, your battery will surely be depleted in
suspended state.

"Major bug"?? That is putting it mildly.
Sorry, Xena, I was not aware of that problem.

But in this case it drains it much faster than it should.

This of course refers to the newer ones running WM5. The older ones (like
my hx2415) running WM2003SE don't have this problem.

Yes, Werner educated me on that 'feature'. Sorry for sounding a bit
condescending.
