When I transfer WAV files from my PC to PocketPC they do not play on the
PocketPC.

Is there a conversion required?

Check the codec... on the pc, right click one of the files and select
properties and drill for the codec info.

Not all wav codecs are supported on the ppc and there is no "codec
install"... notably cisco voice mail codecs.

Some ppc players do play them.

You have two choices: Transcode the file to a format the PDA can play;
or install a player on the PDA that can play the file unaltered. I chose
the
latter for myself. Try the GS Player. It's free.
