View Full Version : GPS Software for PocketPC

I have an inbuilt GPS in my Tytn II. Tom Tom doesn't have maps for my area -
Jersey, Channel Islands. I know that the Co-Pilot software apparently does
have maps for Jersey. Does anyone know of any free software that I can use
with my inbuilt GPS that is likely to have maps for Jersey?

Like "New Jersey?" ;-)

Seriously, a more specific location would help... I could guess but I won't.

Streets & Trips has a european version which may relate, you can then
export maps in Pocket Street's format which will allow position
following on screen, not free but cheap.

Again, narrow down the region.

"maps for my area - Jersey, Channel Islands" Channel Islands seems to
suggest he means the real, original Jersey, not some cheap, knock-off copy
from the colonies ;-)

I suppose if I said I was from "London" some people would assume I meant
London Ohio

Try Google maps mobile, it's free

Jersey is hardly a big enough island to need "narrowing"! (Where did you
think that "New Jersey" was a new version of?)

I can confirm that it is included in my AutoRoute 2002 (= Streets & Trips, I
think). Which was "free" with my XP PC. So I suppose in later versions too.
But that isn't going to give turn-by-turn routing, I presume, on a PPC.
However Jersey roads are not really extensive or busy enough to need such
sophistication...

Cheers, Mike.

Bev's joke is probably only funny to Americans. Typically people
from New Jersey refer to it simply as "Jersey," (pronounced "Joy-Zee")
whereas no one from,
say, New Mexico or New York, would ever refer to them as "Mexico" or
"York."

I thought Bev ruined the "joke" (but thanks for explaining it!) by needing a
narrowing of the specification....

Isn't OziExplorer a solution? It will not bring you route calculations, but
with Jersey being so small it will probably will not matter much. You have
to scan your own maps with it.

I found out that Googlemaps uses TeleAtlas for the Jersey area and we
haven't been mapped yet... however products that use the NAVTEQ maps do
include Jersey, Channel Islands. Can you list GPS software that uses the
NAVTEQ maps. I know that Co-Pilot does but is there anything else.

Perhaps, but since we Americans are pretty geographically ignorant as
a group, he might have been asking if there was more than one Jersey
in the UK or even Europe.

My Navigon-5 UK maps (that came included in my Pocket Loox 500) include
island of Jersey. Seems to have usual detail like petrol stations and
Durrell's Zoo...

I see that there are "Channel Islands" off California, too. But maybe they
don't include a "Jersey"...

Look for the IGuidance software, it works on your laptop, PPC and mobile
phone. It's identical to the software HP sells for thier IPAQs. I believe
that both are made by NavTeq and sold by Navteq.

Yeah but IGuidance only has maps of the USA, Canada, Hawaii etc so no good
to me - thanks for the suggestion though.

You know what Google maps needs a data connection to pull down the
maps, don't you? You could try the alternative microsoft live search
for pocket PC which does an excellent job - don't know which maps it
uses though.

I recommend Ozi for everything except making noodle soup.
Before your trip you can do routs and there are voices in there so they must
do something.
Nautical, aviation and off road there isn't a better product that I have
found for the areas I go to. With trails you can make hand drawn maps to
share with friends for sight seeing and camping spots. It's not free but
well worth the price if nobody has digital maps available.
From a PDF file it takes me less than 10 minutes to calibrate a map and then
convert it for CE but you don't need to convert if you have the space
available.
