View Full Version : Exchange sync on USB fails, server not found

I have a Treo 700wx, Exchange Server 2003 R2, Vista Business Edition, and
Windows Mobile Center 6.1.6965

My e-mail, calendar and contacts are configured to sync with my Exchange
server and everything works fine. The server configuration matches my MX
record mail.mymailserver.com and this resolved to the IP of my mail server.

When I put my Treo in the cradle to do a USB sync, it will only sync Notes
and Files. It always throws the error, "ActiveSync was unable to reach the
server".

Even when it is docked, mail.mymailserver.com should resolve to my server
using the Internet. On a logshot, I tried an entry in my HOST file that
resolved mail.mymailserver.com to 192.168.2.253 but this did not work
either.

There was a setting I checked off in ActiveSync on the Palm to allow data
during a USB sync with the PC. Does anyone have any idea why this does not
work? If I uncradle the Treo, all the Exchange items sync.

Addendum:

I have no Internet connectivity when my Treo is cradles, but I do have local
network connectivity. The cellular service gets disabled when it is
cradled.

In Activesync, choose "File > "Connection Settings" and set the "This
computer is connected to:" field to "The Internet".

In Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 I have this checked off under
"connection settings'

I have discovered that the Treo does not pull a local IP address. I do not
know if this is normal but but the IP is 169.xxx.xxx.xxx which isn't
routable.

When I am cradled and there is a USB connection, I can't browse the network.

In Connections - Advanced - Select Network - "Programs that automatically
connect to a private network" I have "My Network Place" selected. I do not
have a proxy so if I go to "Proxy settings" and check off "this network
connects to the Internet", the check box unchecks itself on the next visit.

Help!

Yes, sorry, Vista of course. I should have said WMDC rather than
Activesync.

Just to be clear: we are presumably referring here to a local Exchange
Server (on your LAN), and a PC on the same LAN running Vista, with
both the PC and the Exchange Server connected to the internet via the
same connection. Is that correct?

If so, I have a similar set up. What I have in WMDC is that "Mobile
Device Settings" > "Connection Settings" is set to:
- "Allow USB connections" = yes.
- "Allow connections to one of the following" = yes, Bluetoooth
selected.
- "This computer is connected to" - "The Internet"

That happens on some machines, and will prevent your PDA from
accessing the internet (and thus your Exchange Server).

On the PDA, go to "Settings" > "Connections" > "Network Cards" >
"Remote-NDIS Host". Then select "use specific IP address" and set "IP
Address", "Subnet mask" and "Default gateway" to valid values for your
LAN. Then OK your way out of there.

If you use the settings above, you should be able to connect to the
internet via a USB-connected device. I can using those settings.

I have both fields set to "My Work Network" (note: I am using a WM5
device).

It shouldn't do that. Mine stays checked.

Try the above, and report back.

Thanks for all you help. Unfortunately it still does not work after the
Remote-NDIS Host settings. I am still getting a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx IP when I
go to 'manage my connections' in Vista and look at the status. I assigned
my Treo a static IP and even reset the device. I also disabled the Vista
firewall with no effect.

I can browse the Treo from my desktop using the icon that ws made when
Windows Media Center was set up.

Thanks,
