View Full Version : Reboot 2-3 times a week, why?

Good Morning,

I hope everyone is doing ok. My boss is using a Treo 700 and has Windows
Mobile 5 on it. He tells me that his PPC locks up approx. 2-3 times per
week and he has to remove the battery to reboot the machine each time. Why
is this? We have Direct Push delivering email to this unit, not sure if
that has anything to do with it or not.

He did have a Palm OS Treo but I convinced him to take it back and get one
with Windows Mobile because all of our systems are built on Microsoft. He
didn't have that problem with the Palm OS. He said someone at the sprint
store told him NOT to get the WM5 device because it wasn't reliable,
customers keep rebooting. Palm was more reliable. Now he's finding out the
guy at the sprint store was right. What can we do?

Sincerely,
Anthony Smith

This may not help you but I will say anyway.
When I first got my pda (wm2003) last December it was locking up terribly
about 2-3 times a week. I was doing hard resets for about a month.
Then I decided to do some tests by running the minimal of applications and
trying to pinpoint the cause. Eventually the problem stopped and whilst I
never found out what the offending program was it has not happened since.

My rather laboured point is that it could be an application he is using
which is causing the lock ups. Try a hard reset and reinstall things one by
one and see if you can pinpoint a cause. Also if he has any backups which
he is installing, it might be a corrupted backup that is causing the
problems.

Hello Anthony,

ask your boss what particular software he's using when the reboots
occur. Otherwise it will be difficult to resolve the issue. Since last
week, I had my device completely shutdown while visiting websites that
are not mobile enabled. I still have to figure out why this is
happening. At least I know IE is the culprit. I don't think DirectPush
is the cause of the trouble, unless this is happening while
downloading emails. Again, try find out out when this is happening.

Why? Because it's Microsoft. Be glad it's not 2-3 times a day!

I'm sure we kept being told to re-install our applications and/or operating
system not so long ago, too...

Ask your boss if he is using Microsoft Reader or any free games. These two
things seem to cause a lot of resetting. Also, soft resetting on a regular
basis seems to be a good way to avoid corrupting files and having to do a
hard reset. It's like the problem that Microsoft Word used to have: if you
used it too long without shutting it off, it would freeze or crash.
Also, some pdas seem to need to be phyically sync-ed almost every day to
stay happy. The longer you've gone since a sync or a reset, the more likely
the gadget is to stop working right.
All this is from experience with two ipaq PPCs, about 10 service calls, and
2 returns-for-repair on my WM 5.
So: if you use a soft reset to turn your pda on every other day, and if you
sync it with a cradle or wire about every other day, it will treat you better.

ok thanks for the replies everyone. Will try soft reset and/or cradling it
to sleep (smile, sync). Hope it works ok.
