View Full Version : Looking for portable power to charge things

I go camping a lot, and one of the problems is trying to power or charge
my electronic while in the woods. I have something I can plug into the
cigarette lighter, and I also have a portable car jumper that I can also
plug something into, but it’s big and awkward.

What I’m looking for is something that I can charge at home, and then
plug my MP3 player, Cell, PDA into it to charge it. Don’t need anything
much larger than a normal sized book, but I’m will to look at anything.
I know this could drain a little, but I'm looking for something that
will hold a charge for at least a week or so.

Thanks in advanced for your assistance!

I have one of these . The unit provides 6000 ma at 5v, which is really
perfect for a Pocket pc. I use it with a PPC6700, but I did have to
make a usb mini cable in order to have it small enough to be convenient
(pocket) - a regular cable size, even with adapter, may work fine for
your uses. The unit is definitely smaller than a paperback, it measures
58.5×24x82(mm) - very pocketable, so to say.

They have many other units as well (for laptops and tablets, even), so
let your needs and price be the guide. Also to note there are many
other places on the web (batteryspace, etc.) that may have what you need
at a reasonable price.

If you are going camping a lot for extended periods consider getting a
roll up (fabric) solar cell - these work great as well, and will charge
a PPC to completion in a few hours- it is sporadic when I use mine, but
it really delivers. Typically they are about 54inches in length when
unrolled.

What about using solar energy to recharge your devices? check out
e.Go. I'm convinced this is the solution that will be most convenient
to you. Check out this link to my blog:

I use a Socket Power Pack:

It has proven to be flexible and poweful enough for me.

Link to the solar charger I have (ICP Powerflex 20w ). There are
others, but you can find this one at a good savings if you shop around.
I got the 20w for $180, IIRC.

Please note that there are other types on the market, but I have used
these on trips with favorable results. Also note that the Coleman
rollup solar charger is simply a rebranded ICP charger, wattages applied
accordingly.

I have the Proporta battery with me on trips (also available from
Javoedge.com).
Have a look at my review here: http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=3503

If you take 2 it should gives you enough power for one week camping or so.
