View Full Version : Having Sync Issues with you Mobile 5.0 Device??

***This post is for people who have a Windows Mobile 5.0 Device and
are using ActiveSync to access there email, contacts, calendars, and
tasks from a Microsoft Exchange 2003 SP2 server.

I have noticed a many posts saying:

"When I do my initial Sync, I get a few random contacts but not all of
them. If I make a change to a contact from outlook on my PC, that
contact then shows up on my Phone/PPC. Why is this happening? And
more importantly, how can I fix this???"

My Problem:

I am testing a 6700 from Verizon for my company. We, like many
others, are looking for a solution to Blackberry. However, after my
fist Sync all I received just were a few emails, period. No contacts,
no calendar appointments, No tasks. Now I noticed that if I changed a
contact though Outlook on my PC, the contact was then pushed to my
phone. The same happened to the other stuff as well. So what does
this mean; I'm going to have to go around and throw a space into every
single calendar entry, contact, and task? Needless to say, I was
pissed. I tried virtually everything else and spend hours on the
forums. What confused the crap out of me was if I logged on to my
corporate webmail, everything was there. This means that the
information HAS to be on the exchange server but why isn't my phone
seeing any of it??????????///slash

Solution:

BEFORE YOU TRY THESE NEXT STEPS, READ THOUGH TO THE END, AND BACK UP
YOUR CONTACTS AND OTHER IMPORTANT JUNK!!

Now I had this hunch that the phone was only getting recently updated
stuff. This might be happening because I assume (*ass out of you and
me) that the Exchange Server keeps track of what was transfer via send/
receive. This way, your whole entire mail store isn't downloaded
every time you smack the send/receive button. Now when your phone
does send/receive via Activestink, the Exchange Sever is only going to
give it was it THINKS is doesn't have already. So if Mr. Exchange
sever (who is very lazy) thinks you have all your contacts, he aint
going to waste he time and/or bandwidth resending them to you.
However, if you make a change and that change gets recorded on the
Exchange Server (via Send/receive) the contact for some reason flags
it self as 'yeah you can transfer me next send/receive'. It seems
like this flag stays active for a while and I'm not sure what turns it
off.

Why does this all of this happen? It probably has something do with
running in cached mode and network bandwidth conservation. So the
objective here is to force your lazy ass Exchange Server to send you
your entire mail store. We do this by marking everything as 'yeah you
can transfer me next send/receive'. So let me shut up and get to it:

1.) In Outlook(PC), get to folder view by clicking the little folder
icon located in the left window pane on the bottom between the notes
icon and the shortcuts icon.

2.) Under the root of your mail box (Not your archived folders) click
contacts. You should see all your contacts in the right pane.

3.) Hit shift F9 (same thing as Tools > Send/Receive > This Folder
(Microsoft Exchange server). This will insure that all local changes
which are waiting to propagate to the Exchange Sever are synced.

4.) Right click contacts on in the left pane and go to properties.

5.) Under the General tab, locate the 'Clear offline Items' button and
smack it and click OK. You should see all your contacts disappear but
worry not, just whack shift F9 again and all your contacts will be re-
downloaded from the Exchange Server.

6.) Finally, perform Activesync your phone; it will download the
entire address book. If you have issues that try wiping the phone or
removing the Exchange Server Settings and setup your mail account from
scratch.

These steps can be performed on your mail box, calendar, and tasks. I
have this other theory that if you turn of cached mode and hit send /
received, you might spark everything in your entire mail store to be
flagged as 'yeah you can transfer me next send/receive'. Then you can
just do step 6. If somebody does that, please post your results.

Good luck and let me know how goes it.
