I'm running WM5.0 on a XV6700. Seems like there's no way to time out the
Verizon phone network connection (EVDO) like there is for wifi. I want to
save batteries and network access time - if no program is using thei nternet
for 5 minutes, my phone should hang up the network! My old WM2002 PPC did it
automatically. Does anyone here know whether such a program exists or could
be written?

I've elaborated on exactly this problem at
http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=611&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1
: you'll want to give a try to GB-SOFT Tweak.

Hope it also works over EVDO (it's designed for GPRS+).
