View Full Version : How to really lock a WM5-device?
Mike D. Njoroge 01-31-2007, 06:37 AM Hi folks,
I joined the dark side approximately 2 months ago, skipping my Treo 650 for
a T-Mobile MDA Vario II (HTC TyTN).
I managed to handle nearly all issues so far, but there is one thing that is
driving my nuts: the keys don't stay locked when I lock the device.
After I (manually) lock the device and turn it off any upcoming event, e.g.
SMS, appointment, whatever, turns the device on and unlocks the keys.
Even though this might seem comfortable when you have the device sitting on
your desk next to you, it definitely is not very good when you carry the
device in your bag and any of the activated buttons keeps being pressed
until the battery is empty.
Am I missing anything here?
Is there any (third-party) application that really keeps the device's keys
locked, no matter what?
Thanks in advance for your kind assistance and expertise!
Humbly, Darth Mike ;-)
Ascssmith 01-31-2007, 10:43 AM Go to this website, the phone made by THC is called a Wizard. search the
forums, there is a FREE program that does this, plus on this site is a ton
of info for the wizard.

Clinton Fitch, MVP-Mobile Devices 01-31-2007, 01:14 PM I will once again post that if you load any of the ROMs on your device
you will certainly void the warranty and could render your device
unusable. ROM updates for your device should come from the OEM
themselves.

Clinton Fitch, MVP-Mobile Devices 01-31-2007, 01:17 PM Mike,
Can you describe how you are locking the device? On my device, if I
use the Lock function (Start>settings>Lock), when I get a SMS, email
or other event it will remain locked (although it will turn on
briefly). Is this how you have your device set up?

Ascssmith 01-31-2007, 01:18 PM first of all, who said anything about installing ROMs' ?
all I said was here is the site to find FREE add-on software to do what
Microsoft can not accomplish for users of Mobile devices...

Hi Clinton and all others who already chimed in,

I have activated the "keylock"-item on the today screen (displays a small
lock and info whether the device is locked or not), set to lock all keys
except the "on/off button" PLUS the locking mechanism referred by you, set
to automatically lock the device after being unused for 5 minutes, display
owner info and require a pin-code for unlocking.
I usually first use the item on the today screen to lock the keys and then
turn off the screen via the on/off-button. This results in a disabled
(touch-)screen and disabled buttons, a semi-standby state.
If I want to access my device later on I use the on/off-button, the device
then displays the owner info, which then takes me to the screen where I have
to enter the pin-code to access the device.
So far so good.
If any event (reminder, SMS, etc.) comes up with my device in this locked
semi standby-state, the display turns on showing the according message in
the bottom part and the two softkeys right below the screen are being
activated to quit the message. If I then quit the message I'm being taken
straight to the owner info and the pin-entering screen. Now if this happens
while I carry my device let's say in a backpack or purse the keys can get
pressed accidentally (and they usually are) which then results in having the
device interpret all further "keystrokes" as a wrong pin-code being entered
until the battery is empty.
E.g. I leave my office in time heading for the next appointment and having
my device in my bag, the reminder comes up, the keys get pressed
accidentally and by the time I get to my next appointment the battery is
empty.
The Palms used to behave exactly the same way, but there was plenty of
third-party SW that did the job. I used to use TealLock
(http://www.tealpoint.com/softlock.htm), which automatically and completely
locked my Treo and kept it that way according to rules I could specify, i.e.
after a certain amount of time, at a certain time of day, etc.

Doesn't the unit shut off By itself after "x" minutes due to it's power
setings? Or do you not have the auto-shutoff set?

Of course it does, but only if it's not in use. Having its keys pressed
presumably results in "being used" and therefore in not shutting off.
