I have an IPAQ 5550 running Mobile 2003 and I find it very difficult to
connect to open wireless networks when they are available. Even setting the
PPC to connect to an avialable network doesn't work nice. Is there a better
WIFI Manager?

Do a search for wifi.
They have a number of free ones available. I think the most popular is
pocket winc
http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=1052
Or hitchhiker
http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=1347
They are all freeware so try them all and find one you like best.

Any recommendations? Also when I install something like pocket WINc does it
take over control of the wireless connection? I'm think about windows XP and
it's stupid Wireless Zero Configuration..

When I tested them I had no problems with them taking over. They should run
side by side seperate to the built in wifi.
I quite liked WifiFoFum as it has a wifi radar on it but when I reinstalled
after a hard reset it did not work. I need to try that one again as the
radar is very useful.

I'll give them a shot and see how it works.

I tried WifiFoFum but it just won't allow you to connect from the
application. Does it only detect?

Actually come to thin kof it, I think it might only be a scanner.
Try the PocketWinC instead. Sorry I think I might be confusing matters.

You can't get rid of WZC, the miserable
piece of crap.
Wonderful stuff, isn't it?
The apps the other poster mentioned are only scanners.

Pocket WINc seems to be a scanner and a connection assistant. It works OK
but it could be better. I find it crazy that it's so hard to connect to new
networks. When I was in Toronto the other day the hotel I was at had an open
WIFI network and there were dozens of other ones available yet my PPC would
connect to any of them for more than a few seconds.

This application may be problematic for new Pocket PCs.
I did not see any WM 5 version, so I tried the Pocket PC 2003 version.
Unfortunately, it is frustrating. If I switch away for some reason and
then come back, the menus are not visible. Also, it insisted on
installing a shortcut in the top level of the Start menu, which means
it displaced a program.
I then tried the same version on a Pocket PC 2003 SE device. I can't
switch away and back at all.
The basic function seemed to work well. But I'm not up for further
testing.
