With the imminent release of Windows Vista I want it be known to new Vista
users that ActiveSync does not work on Vista.

You must download the Windows MObile Device Centre from the Microsoft
website.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=C23C8E6A-A72D-4AEF-9663-31CE2FEFBADA&displaylang=en

Once downloaded this will serve as your activesync and works fine for
installing programs onto PPC.

Since ActiveSync is not the best program in the world (sarcasm intended)
how does the Mobile Device Center compare to AS?

If better then there is no problem, and if anything it would be good
riddance to AS, and another excuse for some of us to upgrade from XP.

Well, uh, better?...It's different, but I'm not sure I would characterize it
as better, at this point. Consider that WMDC is still Beta 3 though, and it
is at least as good as AS, IMHO. Not based on a lot of things connected
though. Note too, that it supports Windows Mobile 2003 and WM5 devices, i.e
not PPC 2002 or earlier, soooo, if you are on and earlier PPC, don't be
looking to sync with Vista.

Might want to look at this
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/devicecenter.mspx (Yes it runs on the
release version of Vista)

HI Wayne,

I suppose its quite difficult to compare the two really. Its certainly not
worse than Activesync, as to whether its better or not, I really do not know
as my experience with activesync is not alot.

Visually it looks very different and does look alot better than activesync,
but of course its under the hood that matters. However both do the same
things really under the hood. You can install, uninstall programs, browse
files on the device. I have had occasions when the computer wants to
install PDA drivers again and I end up with PDA1, 2, 3 and so on. I am not
sure what is at fault there though, it could be the mobile center, it could
be a fault with my usb sockets, so I am not going to point fault anywhere in
particular.

Because they do the same things it is very hard to judge, so I base it on
looks, and the Vista version looks alot better and the functions menu is so
much easier to use. You have little sliding drop down sections for whatever
function you want to use. This saves space in the window as you can only
select one function at a time anyway. When you click on one, the menu drops
down. When you click on another, that menu slides up and the next drops
down.

I was going to do you some screenshots, but there are loads on google.

Further to what I just said, there are a nice set of screenshots here:

WMDC Beta 1, 2 and 3 are total TRASH. "Upgrading" to Vista should
bring expected device driver delays, but to think that the entire
PocketPC owner populace has been completely ignore is utterly
ridiculous. Bill Gates and his concept of "digital lifestyle" has
been totally run over by a steam roller with this POS stand-alone
offering that PocketPC users MUST rely upon. I hope the ENTIRE group
associated with PocketPC products and development are sent back to
India where they belong.
