View Full Version : Suggestions for useful Today plug-ins?
Steve Procuniar 12-13-2006, 10:18 AM I've noticed a few posts on here recently about Today plug-ins which peaked
my interest. I have a Palm Treo with WM5. I just recently decided to go
with an unlimited data plan which I LOVE because I can take advantage of push
email and other programs which access the net regularly.
I currently have a Today weather plug-in that works great for me. However
since the data plan is expensive I’d like to find a few more Today plug-ins
that I would find useful that need the online data (kind of like I need more
for my money to justify it thing).
What are some other types of Today plug-ins out there that you all find
useful? I don’t need a launcher (I have SmallMenu now and it works great) or
a weather application… I’m looking for types other than these.
Suggest away! I’m looking forward to seeing what else is out there.
Thanks.

I second that. I use (all from SPB) Pocket Plus, Diary, Weather,
Finance, and Time which all interface in some way with the today screen (make
sure to install to the device not a memory card). It puts all my need to
know info on the today screen. Some people like uncluttered simple today
screens, but I like to be able to just look at the screen and not have to
hit many buttons. Depends on what you need.
As far as justifying your data plan there are plenty of programs out there
that would justify it. One of my most recent favorites is the Microsoft
Live Search Beta, which gives you traffic updates (every 2 minutes),
directions, and maps all through your data connection. SPB Insight is also
a great program I use that downloads RSS feeds and the entire article as
well, everything comes to you as long as you know what you want. Its almost
like a push version of the internet (I don't have an unlimited data plan, so
it updates for me when I sync it at my computer, which is great as well).
The instant messengers are good for data usage too. There's lots of stuff
out there you just gotta find what is useful to you.

One more thing I would add to justify your data plan, and that is you could
get a lower number of minutes on your phone and use Skype to make calls to
anyone outside your In Calling, using the data network.

Clinton Fitch, MVP-Mobile Devices 12-14-2006, 05:28 PM I would have to go along and say the Spb products are great. Also
look at SBSH as well. They have similar Today screen products and
work great.

Steve Procuniar 12-15-2006, 09:23 AM Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I already use PocketBreeze and
PocketWeather from SBSH with much success. I just this week tried Live
Search Beta and I'm impressed, unfortunately no Today plug-in and I don't
live in one of the cities that they report traffic in so I'm out of luck
there.
I currently use NewsBreak from Ilium for RSS feeds. Does anyone know how
this compares to SPB Insight? I like NewsBreak but its Today plug-in is very
limited. Is Insight better in this regard?
Edgar, what do you use SPB Diary for?
So I already have weather, launcher, and RSS apps. I don't need any for
messenging or contacts. What else is out there?
Clinton Fitch, MVP-Mobile Devices 12-15-2006, 09:55 AM Steve,
I've done reviews of both NewsBreak and Insight and I like both of
them. Insight doesn't have a Today screen plug in though so that is
going to pretty much eliminate it for you in this case.
NewsBreak Review:

Spb Insight Review:
http://www.clintonfitch.com/reviews/spb/insight-1-0/default.asp
Diary is essentially to put your PIM information on your Today screen.
I love this application personally. It was in my Top 10 Applications
list this year and I reviewed it earlier this fall.

The cool thing with the Spb applications is if you have Pocket Plus
from them, all of them can integrate into one Today plug in saving you
screen space. Unfortunately Insight won't integrate yet but Diary,
Finance, Time will.
