Hi,
I currently use a HP iPaq 4705 Pocket PC PDA running Windows CE 4.21. I
primary use Agenda Fusion on it for sceduling, tasks and contacts. I
thinkthe machine is great although the synching using Active Sync 3.8
is not as good as it should be.
I have some questions:
1. Should I move up to Windows Mobile 5? is there a downside to
upgrading?
2. My iPaq is a bit old. I would like to buy a new one, but I'm not
sure which. I want a powerful and fast Pocket PC with a great screen (I
am spolied with the iPaq's 480 x 640 TFT display). I am not that
interested in a Palm at this time, and from what I have heard the Palm
Treo 700w is not that great. I have heard good things about the Dell
Axim, but I'd rather not go Dell unless I really have to.
Can you you give me some suggestions? Thanks.

Yes- you lose the ability to sync over Wi-Fi, and the OS is slower,
mostly due to the memory- it's now flash instead of RAM. This means dead
Batteries no longer erase everything, but any memory-intensive work-
contact look ups, file open/closes are FAR more sluggish.

I doubt anything today is much faster, and VGA is as high-res as they get.

WM5 hogs more memory, so a 64mb WM5 device will have less free RAM than a
64MB WM2003 unit. This goes double for convergence (phone) devices as
the phone app runs all of the time "outside" the OS (so it can't be
shutdown by the OS or the user by mistake.)
Having said that, I use a WM5 device (an HTC Wizard) because I wanted a
PPC phone, and the Wizard had the hardware I wanted (EDGE-speed GSM data,
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and at least a QVGA screen) but given a choice, I'd
have taken a WM2003 version if such a thing existed. (No WM2003 model
had a QVGA screen, wi-fi and EDGE.)

I'd stick with the 4705 until it breaks or you need to go to a PPC phone.
What do you want to do that the 4705 doesn't?

In addition to Tood's remars, I also recommend the hx4700 category (
http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&cat=96 ) in my blog - the
primary resources for the hx4700 WM5 upgrade, the problems, bugs,
everything.
In a nutshell: the hx4700 WM5 upgrade is a double-edged sword. While WM5 is
decidedly better, (with recent releases) more compatible and more stable
than WM2003SE, it does have its share of problems on the hx4700 because of
the slow flash ROM. That is, you will want to compare the advantages and
disadvantages of both OS implementations before upgrading.
