Buyer review: Sprint PPC-6700 Pocket PC with Windows Mobile 5.0
As time goes on, computers continue to get smaller and smaller.
Computing power unimagined 20 years ago is now available in a card
deck-sized chassis.
Being a happy new owner of Sprint' PPC-6700 (manufactured by
UTStarcom) I wanted to share this gem with anyone in a position to
renew their revolving contract with Nextel or Sprint. This really is
the way to go if you want to take the following with you:
* Outlook Contact Folder
* Outlook Task List
* Outlook Inbox
* Word, Excel, Powerpoint Documents
* WMA and MP3 audio tracks for playback
* MSN Messenger with your buddy list
* MSN Hotmail Mobile
The Microsoft Outlook integration is the killer application

Thanks for the review!

Hey Justin....a question more on service plans than
anything else.
is it possible to get a PPC-6700 and just get cell
phone only service plan but still use the PDA functions
of the 6700?
Or must one not only get cell service but get a data
plan as well?
Justin Brown - SYNACS 10-31-2006, 01:55 PM Dave, I didn't get that far in my testing, or I would have mentioned
it. On the other hand, modem capability is pretty much a standard at
this point, is it now?
By the way, thanks for all the feedback. This is fuel for me to write
more, as I get the gadgets and the time.
Cheers,
Justin

Justin Brown - SYNACS 10-31-2006, 02:05 PM Spell check: above post should read "is it not" =]
Great question. The Sprint store reps I connected with gave me
conflicting information. The pushier of the two told me that data
service was not optional, and that if I planned to use the phone for
its phone and PDA features only, that I should go with a Motorola i930.
The i930 basically looked like a revision of the i860 which I love, but
it didn't the have Wifi, touch screen, or big alpha keys I was looking
for.
Anyways at checkout I was told that I don't in fact need to purchase
data but that I should since it's only $15 and I am eventually going to
want it anyways (everyone does).
The checkout rep had a good sales pitch.
HTH!

Being a rather fond user of EVDo myself, I must ask this burning quesion -
WHY? For $15/month (7 if you have another phone in your name with vision)
you get unlimited download at quasi-broadband speeds. That is almost like
agreeing to date a supermodel with the stipulation that you do not have to
kiss her good night. (Well, you get my gist, I suppose).
(BTW, would not dating a supermodel be cool, since dinner out with them
would be rather cheap? But I digress...)

Got so caught up in the whole supermodel thing I forgot to answer the
question - Yes, you can get the 6700 without a vision plan.
Justin Brown - SYNACS 10-31-2006, 05:57 PM As I mentioned in the review, EVDO is not available everywhere. If you
can get it, great, but as of right now my entire county is out of luck.
So, for people in Monterey, CA it is a notable savings ($180 per year)
NOT to sign onto data services.
Another consideration is that you can easily ADD data services without
renewing your contract, but you can't remove data after you've
subscribed without violating the same agreement. I'd rather be wanting
to scale up than wanting to scale down.
Second,

You might also want to add that subscribers wanting tethering (Phone as
Modem, or PAM), must purchase one of the two PAM plans listed at:
http://www.sprint.com/business/products/products/pcsVisionPlan_tabA.html
Or expect to incurr per kb data charges while using Sprint's data network.
The PAM plan includes basic power vision for the phone.
But these relate to sprint in general, not the PPC6700 (I have one too,
pretty useful tool :-)

Well for $15 a month I would go ahead and get data
access.....I just didn't know if it was that cheap

OK
That's a deal breaker...I would go ahead and get data
that cheap.
I just wrongly assumed it was a hell of a lot more $
than that

Good point
You can always use a free wifi connection somewhere if
you don't get a data plan

Yes, I would heavily encourage anyone to not sign up for services that they
cannot use in their area. And a lot of wireless salespeople will sell you
exactly that, sad to say.
Good thing to mention, IMHO.
