View Full Version : How do I uninstall unused M$ programs?

Larry

On my PC, I can put up with unused M$ memory hogs like IE, WMP, etc. I
don't use, as there's plenty of memory/storage to waste. But, in the Axis
X51v, this is a different matter....

After being told I need Outlook to sync to in the computer and notebooks,
being forced to replace my stable clients I've used for years, I've decided
to keep my Handspring Visor Edge and its far-more-stable OS/programs as my
contact list, todo list, appointment calendar...all those things you carry
a PDA for in the first place...in my pocket to do these tasks, so I can
keep my favorite email/newsgroup clients and already-up-and-working-
wonderfully Palm Desktop to interface with them far more easily.

Now, my question arises.....

Is there anyway to actually UNINSTALL the built-in programs WM5 insists on
using, with no apparent way of deleting them....saving that memory for more
useful tasks like 3rd party stuff I'm finding, or am I just stuck with them
hogging memory I could put to better use?

I bought the X51v as my answer to a wifi Skype phone that WILL logon to
commercial wifi hotspots through their webpages, never intending for it to
be my Palm Pilot, in the first place. I don't like to screw around
replacing something that works so well for the things it was designed to
do. Mobile Email Spam doesn't make me go all Googlie, either...(c;

Any suggestions?....other than go to Hell, that is.

I'm already wearin' out the soft reset rubber switch.....

Hello,

On applications that are installed in your device's ROM - Windows
Media Player, Pocket Internet Explorer to use your examples - cannot
be uninstalled. However they are part of the ROM image and do not
require any extra memory to store other than the size of the ROM image
itself.

With the other issues that are causing you to "wear out" the soft
reset on your device, please post on what those issues are so others
can help if possible. There are a lot of people who have a lot of
experience in this group that could help.

1) It simply locks. No clicking, no response to the buttons, no timeouts
from waiting too long for something to respond. Even the power button is
frozen, you can't shut it down. Only two alternatives....soft reset or
take the battery out. I figured soft reset was less destructive. Dell
should have put the reset button next to the Power button on the front of
it.

2) It looses "horizontal hold". The screen looks exactly like an old NTSC
TV someone needs to adjust the horizontal hold on. The picture has fallen
over and isn't sync'd with the scanning.

3) When I got it this week, Switcher Bar was at the top by default. If
you turn it off and on, or even let it just sit for hours by itself without
touching it, switcher bar disappears and you have to go to System to click
it back on.

Switcher bar has also lost its way. As I type this (on my main PC), Skype
for Mobile and TCPMP are booted. Click on switcher bar and neither of the
programs is listed on Switcher Bar, so you can't switch between programs
that don't exist. I just layered in (booted) IE, File Explorer, WMP.
Nothing shows on switcher bar as if no program is booted. Exit Switcher
Bar from its own menu and it will NOT reboot from the System Setting
screen. You get a low tone beep as if WM5 can't find the program. Back to
the soft reset...switcher bar and its function temporarily restored...until
it crashes again for no apparent reason. WM5 just loses it and stops
talking to what it can't find, EVEN THOUGH switcher bar is STILL running
because I can click up its control box! Acts as if Switcher Bar is
running, but WM5 just stops communicating with it except for touchscreen
clicks, which work.

4) When I went to bed last night, Skype and TCPMP and Qusnetsoft
Newsreader were on the TODAY screen for easy selection. Today, all these
external programs have vanished. They're on the START list. They run fine
and don't crash. Today lost 'em. There is no more checkbox in the Today
configuration screen to check to recover them. As far as Today is
concerned, they are not installed. There's no way to recover them, except,
possibly, to reinstall them.

I just X'd off the screen (minimized? very confusing, they're still
running) Skype, Qus News and TCPMP. I'm back on the Today screen.
Switcher bar has turned itself off. It's icon is no longer on the bar
across the top. Why does it turn things off just because I change screens?
The battery icon at the top comes and goes, too. Sometimes it's there,
sometimes it's gone. Right now, it's there. Why does X mean minimize not
_ like on XP? X doesn't shut anything off. Skype still calls. TCPMP
still plays if it was playing when X'd off. Without switcher control...How
do I shut off anything that just minimizes with X...like IE or Explorer or
WMP?

I've only had it 3 days, so you'll have to excuse me if I'm a bit confused
about its inconsistent quirks/crashes/bugs. Maybe I can get used to them,
but I'm sure glad XP Pro on my other computers doesn't run like this thing!
The WM5 doesn't seem to crash. The GUI has locked even while in a Skype
call, but the OS and Skype were still running because I didn't notice it
until I tried to click the GUI to hang up the call or, on TCPMP, tried to
change what was playing or just stop the play. The OS kernel and programs
were still playing in mic/speaker/to wifi just fine. But, all control with
the GUI just locks. Even IE control locks, but it continues to run because
webpage spam and update pushes still cause it to update correctly....well,
as correctly as it can given its lack of many standard webpage
features...like Google Maps? That trashes it.

Any help is greatly appreciated.....

Where's WM5's Windows Automatic UPdate?? I don't see it in IE or on any
place I can find....

Thanks for all your helps...and software suggestions.

Larry,

I have several questions here to try to help you narrow down what is
going on. At first blush it sounds like it could either be a rogue
application causing your problems or the device itself could be
defective. I have an x51v myself and have had virtually no issues
with it. Windows Mobile, like Windows for your PC, generally needs a
reboot every once in a while but not very often. I reboot mine maybe
once a week - and that is with the insane amount of software I take on
and off of the device that I'm reviewing the time.

I will say that Switch Bar is not all that great in my opinion. I've
never had success using it and quickly abandoned it. I'd opt for a
3rd party application.

In Windows Mobile the "X" only minimizes applications, it doesn't
close them. This has been a complaint about Windows Mobile since
Moses was a corporal. Try Spb Pocket Plus as it will let you close or
minimize an application depending on the length of time you hold the
"X".

1. What ROM version are you running on your x51v?
2. If you hard reset the device, do you still have these issues (ie,
with no applications loaded on the device other than the ROM image
applications)?
3. Are you seeing this with a specific application or set of
applications? If so, which ones?
4. Do you have any applications that accelerate the video or alters
it in any way?
5. Do you have video issues in Landscape mode.

Sorry for all the questions - just trying to help end some of your
frustration.

To me, it sounds like your Ax is defective. Why not call Dell and swap
it for a new one?

Every WM device I've ever played with has a few bugs, but nothing like
you're describing.

This very much sounds like the behaviour of my old Ipaq, when I had some
overclocking program installed and overclocked it way too much.

After virtually being told Dell wasn't going to fix the bluetooth fiasco in
the X50/X51 with all but serial port deleted, I've decided to return mine
before my 21 day trial period is up for a full refund. Problem solved.

I'm going back to my Gateway notebook mainframe. XP is better than this.
