View Full Version : Backup To/Restore From SD Card?

I'm slogging through

http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=1270&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

but I still haven't figured out if there is a Pocket PC backup utility that will
allow me to:
-------------------------------------------------------
- Back up to an onboard SD card

- Do daily incremental backups

- Remove the SD card

- Have the Pocket PC go away (lost/stolen/destroyed...)

- Overnight in a new, empty Pocket PC

- Insert the SD card

- Invoke some app on the SD card

- Be back up and running such that if the replacement
device were the same make model as the lost device, I wouldn't
be able to tell the diff without checking the serial number

i.e. with all my fonts, settings, data, applications, and so-forth.

I would suggest you google this newsgroup for Werner's site as he has just
done a review of backup software (among other things) that you may find
useful.
Overall the answer is yes.

Trying to find a 1st world answer to a 3rd world problem aint easy.
Trying to find a 3rd world answer to a 1st world problem isn't a walk in the
park either.
To mail spam is really hot but please reply to thread so all may benefit (or
laugh at my mistakes)

Per Brad Leyden:
>Overall the answer is yes.

Thanks. That's all I really need to know at this point.

It was a go-no-go decision point for me.

All of the current backup solutions (SKYools, Sunnysoft, Spb, Sprite Backup)
allow for all this. That is, they store their backup files on the card and
let for restoring them on another PDA (of the same model / ROM version) if
yours gets stolen.

I use Sprite software for this. It puts an executable file on your card,
and all you need to do is run it, and your Pocket PC or Smartphone is back
to where you had it.

I'd really be curious why these utils don't allow a "data recovery"
option such as extracting everything (including the registry and pim) to
a pc folder so that recovery from a disaster where there is not a
matching model available.

Spb Backup Unpack (
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/backup/unpack.html?en ) is an
exception (see the "Desktop-based backup file browser tool capable of
selective restoring to both the PDA and the desktop (to extract files if
there's no (suitable/compatible) PDA connected), similar to that of
STGViewer and HPC Vault" row in the main comparison chart of the Backup
Bible).

That is, if you do need desktop-based extraction capabilities, go for Spb.

Also note that backup apps with cross-restoration capabilities - all the
WM5-compliant apps - allow for restoring any file on any other device. That
is, you can still extract any file from them onto any Pocket PC model. This
somewhat alleviates the problem.
