View Full Version : How do I setup for two WiFi configurations?

I've an HP iPAQ 4150 (Windows Mobile 2003 aka CE 4.2) and operate it
from two locations.

1) Home.

iPAQ has a static IP (192.168.0.51)
Known IP address of router (192.168.0.100)
The DNS server addresses are known (212.67.120.148 & 212.67.96.128)
WAP with pass key required.
The WiFi connection is configured to work with only one MAC address.
SID =secure (for want of a better name here)

2) Other location.

Dynamic IP assigned by server
Open WiFi connection with no password required.
IPs of DNS servers are set by the WiFi router.
SID=insecure (for want of a better name here)

I move the iPAQ between the two places.

The problem is each time I move from one to the other, the I need to
re-enter the network settings. I normally find when I go to the insecure
network, it thinks it should have a fixed IP and I need to change that.
When I go home to the secure network, it normally needs me to change to
static IPs and me specify the IP addresses again.

Using dynamic IPs at home, with the DNS server addresses sent via WiFi
is not practical for various reasons.

I know the iPAQ has the ability to have multiple networks, but it seems
when I go into "Configure Network Adapters" -> iPAQ WLAN Wireless
Adapters, changing the details on one network seems to affect both. I
can't seem to get the iPAQ to treat them sepparately.

Am I missing some way of setting up two entirely different WiFi
configurations, and keep these configurations, without having to reenter
them again?

In an ideal world, I'd like the iPAQ to configure itself to the correct
network, based on the SID, but even changing it manually would not be so
bad if I could avoid putting so much information in, especially when I
go home, as I normally forget the IP addresses of the DNS servers, so
need to reenter them.

Hi Dave:
I also have a h4150 and I think your problem is that your using a static IP
address at home.
I can connect to several WiFi connections without any problems by setting
the IP address to Auto.
My WiFi IP address at home is set up automatically by my Wireless router.
My wireless router can reserve IP addresses according to the MAC address of
the WiFi hardware trying to connect, so I don't have to set it statically
(ie. I always have the same IP address when I connect at home).
So if you require a static address at home then try setting a reserved
address in your router for your h4150 MAC address.

select "IPAQ WLAN Wireless Adapter" when selecting the adapter.
Hope this helps.

May be - I had suspected this.

My setup is basically
ADSL modem -> router -> switch -> Wireless Access Point -> iPAQ

(the modem and router are one device, but the Wireless access point is
completely separate).

The problem is the switch has multiple computers hanging off of it, in
addition to the Wireless Access Point. Those are mainly UNIX machines
but need static IPs since I tend to want to connect from one to the
other and want to know exactly what the IP address is.

Hence the router is set up for static IPs. Given this, the IP addresses
of the DNS servers is not broadcast from the router. But the Wireless
Access Point has no provision for entering those addresses, so I can't
see how to get them to the iPAQ.

I'll take a look at the link and also take another look to see if I can
use a dynamic IP at home for the device on the WiFi network, which is
only the iPAQ.
