View Full Version : Microsoft Reader Activation

StevePlym

I have downloaded Microsoft Reader and after opening it on my iPAQ2490 I'm
told it needs to be activated.

I've gone to the relevant Microsoft site and followed the instructions but
end up being told that my pocket pc is running an old operating system which
is not compatible with activation!

As I've got WM5 on my ppc how do you suggest I get over this problem?

Send an email to Microsnot, there are files that you have to manually
install on your ppc for it to work.
You will be VERY lucky if they reply with anything meaningful.
In my opinion, it's a piece of cruddy software and unless you have purchased
ebooks that are locked, then I wouldn't bother to register it - as it will
work fine as a free reader.
I am currently waiting for Microsnot to fix my activation problems - I have
three devices and their system thinks I have over 6 and therefore cannot
activate my new laptop, thus I cannot read locked titles - and it's
pointless me buying anymore.
Take a leaf from my "book" - don't bother with Microsoft if you want to
purchase ebooks, try another DRM system that actually has customer service
and somebody who replies with intelligence to an email request for help.

Maybe another reader can steer you right, how about Adobe?

Read the ebooks newsgroup, more than 90% of the posts are to do with this
problem. You'll find the answer there.

Hi steve,
This is what I stumbled across when I was searching for into about my own
Reader woes:
http://hardware.mcse.ms/message307946.html

There are obviously files that have to be replaced to "update" WM5. All you
have to do is find out what files they are.

Ok, after a bit more Googling, I found the following:
--------------------
Currently there is a problem with the activation on a lot of device because
of a missing oeminfo.xml file in the Windows directory on the mobile device.
When you try to activate Reader, it tells you the version of the mobile OS
you have is too old. To get this file, email msreadergirl@comcast.net with
your device brand and make, and she'll send you the file. A bit of a clumsy
experience, but given the time to takes to get ROM updates through all the
device manufacturers, this process is better than waiting 6 months.
---------------------

It was dated March 2006, but you could give it a go.
Hope this helps.

As I have said earlier, that is the usual soloution send the e-mail with the
exact model you have and wait for the reply.

It isn't Microsoft's fault exactly, it lies with the manafacturers, the file
should be made at the time the rom image is made and distributed with it.

I liked the reply I recieved to my last post.

Good luck- the file didn't work for me. The activation process acted
liked it worked (my PC said my PPC was activated), my copy of Reader said
it was activated (on Reader's splash screen), yet none of my DRM'd ebooks
would open- the screen said my copy of Reader needed to be activated. (

My final solution was to use the freeware utility CLit (Convert Lit) to
strip the DRM from my ebooks.

(Before anyone cringes at this apparent "piracy/hacking" tool, CLit uses
the encryption key on your activated PC to unlock and strip off the
encryption. This means you can only de-encrypt your own ebooks, not
anyone elses.)

A drastic solution perhaps, but after several weeks of f---ing with
Reader and it's activation process I threw in the towel.

We all need a little help now and then - sometimes it's just one "elusive"
keyword that we just can't think of.

I figure the more help I can give, the more chance I've got of receiving

Hmm...Do you really think the manufacturers purposely deleted that
particular file from the system files they were provided with by Microsoft
before custimasation took place?

More likely the microsoft folks that distribute said system files (right
hand) did not include a file that the Reader group (left hand) required.
As to the need for the requirement, well that is a different story... wacky
DRM tricks aside...

Todd:

You may have discovered this already but on the off chance that you are
still viewing here and for the benefit of others I think I may know why your
activation didn't work.

If your activation seems to go well (e.g. no errors) but you are still
getting behavior that your machine is not activated please check to assure
that your activation files are located in the default/device location and
not on your storage card. Installing your activation components to your
storage card will result in the Microsoft Reader being unable to view them.
If you have installed the activation to your SD card please uninstall them
fully before you attempt to reactivate. Failing to do so can result in
further errors on the system.

To fully uninstall the activation components please do the following:

Cradle the device
On your PC open activesync and go to Tools | Add/remove programs
Select Microsoft Activation
Click the "Remove" button in the "Remove from both locations" section in the
dialog
Reactivate once again from
http://das.microsoft.com/activate/en-us/default.asp

Please let me know if this does not resolve your issue.

Sincerely,
Christine - Microsoft Reader Team

Sadly the activation files are in the main memory, as is Reader.

> Please let me know if this does not resolve your issue.

It did not. I am curious, however, is that oeminfo file you e-mail
different for each device, or is it generic? For example, I have a T-
Mobile MDA (HTC Wizard) and was e-mailed an oeminfo file with "HP" as the
manufacturer listed in the file.

Could this be the problem, that no oeminfo file for my device exists?
