I have an iPAQ hx2490. I am transitioning to a Cingular 8125 smartphone. How
do I clear my Contacts on the iPAQ? I have performed a hard reset and
cleared everything else I can find, but the contacts list still exists.

TIA

Hard reset wipes out everything, you should have no contacts, applications,
nothing. Should be back to factory-shipped state.
Sure it wasn't a soft-reset you did?

I thought it was odd, too. I followed the instructions for a hard reset
(hold down the calendar and iTask buttons, then press the recessed reset
button, then release the buttons, then release the reset button). However,
you really need four hands to manage that reset process adequately.

I've tried four times.

However, I may have misread or misinterpreted the instructions. Any
clarification from the group will be a big help.

So, did I perform a soft reset, not a hard reset?

You need the Clean Reset and not the hard reset for a WM5 device...

Press and hold down the Contacts and Inbox buttons. While holding down these
buttons, use the stylus to lightly press the Reset button on the bottom of
the iPaq Pocket PC for about two seconds.

A dialogue box will pop up asking for confirmation. Press the Calendar
button and the unit will begin the clean reset process.

When I press the Contacts and Inbox buttons, followed by the Reset button, I
see no dialogue box.

Sorry the 2490 is different to the 4700, Here are the instructions for a
clean reset on 2490....
1.. Press and hold the Calendar button, the Power button, and the
Messaging button.

2.. While holding these buttons, use the stylus to lightly press the Reset
button on the bottom of the HP iPAQ.

Contortionist that I am ( :) ), I am usually able to hold the Calendar,
Power and Messaging buttons with one hand, while pressing the Reset button
with the stylus held in the other.

As I am pressing the buttons, I see a screen asking me if I want to enable
some feature (I can't reliably reproduce it, but it seems to be some sort of
security feature) or it brings up the "Wireless" network screen. Then it
reboots.

Am I not hitting the keys in the right order? With the arthritis I have in
my hands, this process is getting painful. There **must** be a better/easier
way to reset this device.

....thump...thump...thump... (that's my head on my desk)

Now that I discerned the difference between the *Contacts* button and the
*Calendar* button.... *and* remembered to press reset, not just watch it
power down.... I have reset the device.

Another case of the keyboard<->chair interface being the problem.

Thanks for your help Laura!

I'm glad to help - sorry about the confusion.
Also sorry about the contortion - they want to make sure that these keys
aren't accidentally pressed together, sounds like they designed this fairly
well !!!???!!!
