View Full Version : PocketPC vs Palm? I know I know.. discusssed a million times
me@privacy.net 06-21-2006, 12:52 PM I'm having a hard time deciding which OS to go with
I notice a LOT more PPC traffic than Palm traffic on
Usenet so that makes me lean toward PPC
Werner \Menneisyys\ Ruotsalainen [MVP - Windows - Mobile Devices] 06-21-2006, 01:43 PM Depends on your needs. If you want to use your device for more serious tasks
than "simple" PIM stuff, I'd go for the PPC.
(BTW, I've also had Palm OS devices and still have a T|3.)

I've had Palms for years, but now with an Axim X30H (defunct, I know,
but it's fine).
The only thing a PPC can do that a Palm can't is multi-task. Forget
the PPC = complex stuff and Palm = simple stuff, it isn't true.
There's damn good programs out there for each platform, and some Palm
programs out perform the PPC (Ultrasoft Money, DateBK for starters).
ActiveSync is truly horrid on the PPC (simply fails from time to time,
based on it's mood of the day). Palm HotSync is great, stable, and
"just works".
But, despite the above I'd head you towards a PPC. I think Palm is
slowly exiting the PDA market unless you want a phone/pda (Trio). And
secondly, every Palm I've had that has the built-in rechargable
batteries has had a failed battery some short time after the guarantee
has run out. They aren't replaceable by the customer (unless techy).
When my PPC battery died I simply got a new one and in it went.

Actually the Treo is the unit I was looking at
So what you advise now?
Brooke 06-22-2006, 09:29 AM Well let me tell you a little about my recent jump from the Treo the
PPC-6700. I was a big fan of the Treo and had been using the Treo 650 for
about 1 1/2 years. I then purchased the Treo 700P about three weeks ago and
was not very impressed (EVDO speed was good). The Treo is a great device
if the telephone is the most important feature. The Treo has a great
screen, easily used with one hand, and a very simple interface. I started
having problems with the Treo 700P right away and ended up doing three hard
resets in one week. I took the 700P back to Sprint and came home with the
PPC-6700.
I struggled with the 6700 at first as it has a lot more features than the
Treo. After a few days I totally loved the 6700! I am able to achieve
download speeds up to 1100 kbit/sec but, was never to get over 450 kbit/sec
with the Treo. The 6700 has Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Direct Push Mail, EVDO, and
VPN. It's pretty cool that I can VPN into my work while on the road and
browse the company network and download files. The multi-tasking is great,
being able to cut and past from one program to another. Also, only had to
install a few third party programs to get the functionality that I wanted.
I had at least 15 third party programs on the Treo, but only have 8 one my
6700.
One of the most important things that I had to do on the 6700 when I first
got it was to disable Activesync from running constantly in the back ground.
After Activesync was stopped from randomly running, the 6700 runs like a
champ!
Here are a few other items that come to mind...
1. Can use mp3, wave, wma, etc. files as ringtones, and they can all be
stored on the SD card (Have 1 gig SD on mine)
2. Sync's perfectly with Outlook
3. Slide out keyboard is very useable, but usually use the Fitaly soft
keyboard. (www.fitaly.com)
4. Built-in spell check (email before sending, Word)
5. Suggest words as typing. Allows custom words to be added to dictionary
6. Mini USB sync cable instead of the custom cable for the Treo.
7. Free belt case with PPC-6700, and two stylus included.
8. Easier to develop custom programs than Palm.

Yes please do
I'm assuming the 670 is windows mobile only, right?

Wow the Treo has a proprietary sync cable huh? That's
not good
Question..... the slider mechanism of the 6700. Does it
appear to be robust and not a potential problem point?
Brooke 06-22-2006, 12:23 PM PPC-6700 has Windows Mobile 5.0
The slider feels solid, but I signed up for the Total Equipment Package so
if anything breaks then I will get it replaced/repaired by Sprint. I really
don't use the slide out keyboard anyway since I can average about 50 wpm
using Fitaly.

George 06-24-2006, 12:54 PM One other issue may be your PC operating system. I've recently bought a
Palm TX only to learn that it does not sync consistently with the XP Media
Center operating system nor have proper visibility as a USB device. Palm
does not currently support that operating system.

ladysbytes@yahoo.com 06-24-2006, 02:17 PM Might I add that the Palm sync allows you to control where things go on
the palm, whereas the sync on tne PPC does not. This is the cause of
much frustration to me, as I had separate cards for different tasks on
the palm and expected to do likewise on the PPC. But, alas, I cannot.
I'm going back to a palm very soon.

Good point
Okay here is my input....
I am a long time Palm user. Actually I started with a Sharp Wizard back in
the mid-80's then a Palm III then the IIIX then the V and finally the
Tungsten T3. Last week, I bought the Dell Axim X51V. I literally jumped the
Palm ship.
For me the writing is on the wall.
Palm has not had a significant new release for over 2 years in Hardware.
The 6.x OS was never picked up by any 3rd party vendor and is not availble
on any currently selling units.
Palm itself jumped there own ship with the creation of the 700W.
I am betting that these observations illustrate that the Palm hardware
future is limited if not altogether gone.

Yeah..... kinds what I was thinking as well
I'm sure that Palm may be more 'elegant" in design and
such...... but you cant ignore the fact that everything
I se is coming out with windows mobile
Plus.... on the newsgroups...there is a LOT more Usenet
traffic on the windows mobile newsgroups than the Palm
groups by far
