View Full Version : Using a Pocket PC/Telephpny /w Data Access as an Internet Gateway

I use a Pocket PC with Verizon Wireless Voice and Data plan. I'd like
to be able to use my smart phone (running Windows Mobile) as a Gateway
to the 'data', i.e. the Internet.

It would be quite elegant to connect a laptop to the smart phone for
Internet access via the smart phone.

Thank you for your thoughts.

The "smart phone" is Verizon XV6700 running Windows Mobile 2003.
I just ordered it, and still do not have it in my possession.

There's no difficulty whatsoever in configuring a Windows computer to
be a Gateway for Internet access, when dealing with Win 95/98, NT, ME,
2000, or XP by running IPCONFIG.

I suspect that it might not be easy (or even possible) on Windows
Mobile. I hope I'm wrong.

Thank you for sharing your experience with this topic.

If I understand your request, what you are trying to do is use the phone
as a modem connection to your laptop to connect it to your mobile
provider's internet connection.

This is possible with a number of WM devices, but requires that
usb/modem drivers for the specific phone be available as they apparently
are for this device... see;

http://www.mobiletechreview.com/Verizon-XV6700.htm

and search for the word "driver"

Next question... why do you need this, as most connection needs when
mobile can be accomplished on the device itself?

Last time I looked it was in a different folder. You need to look in the
"\Windows" Folder, and just move it to the Program Files folder, and place a
shortcut in the start menu. Also, it is a hidden file, so you need to use
something like total commander to see it.

More info as well, but given EDgar's explanation probably superflous:

Just be dilligent about any unexpected tethering charges Verizon might
charge as a result. Unlike Sprint, they do not officially allow the 6700
to be a tethering solution for a laptop (as spelled out in the Verizon
agreement ) Verizon is fighting back, so they may eventually change their
stance on this as well:

Good Luck

Beverly:

Thank you for the information. Whether to connect a laptop to the
Internet via a separate wireless adaptor is a matter of economics. Such
laptop adaptor is a distinct device, for which the WSP (Verizon
Wireless) would charge another $50 or so per month for the data
service.

Hence, as I already have a Windows Mobile 2003 smart phone with data
service, why not use it as a gateway for the laptop.

I will explore this further, time permitting, and shall let everyone
know whether it worked well.

So far, the XV6700 Ethernet (websites optimized for mobile access)
manages to work without annoying me too much, even though the WAP
protocol is inherently quite slow.

Thanks, everyone.
