View Full Version : PIE - bah humbug!
AMD2800 06-04-2006, 03:56 PM PIE is useless.
So much so I have bought Opera for Pocket PC.
This has tabs and is super fast plus loads pages PIE closed down on!!
MS have a lot to answer for with PIE it is taking up memory for no reason at
all.
I recommend Opera had no trouble since trying the demo.
Though I would share this for those frustrated with PIE.
PIE doesn't take up any usable memory. Also why should everybody pay for a
product that only some use. There is limited space in ROM for the
applications that are built in and a bloated PIE would only mean something
else would have to be left out. Spend money on the products you use
regularly. Others may not want them. I don't.

You've either got the beta, or the 30 day trial, but it's not free.
Andrew 06-05-2006, 05:05 AM Agreed.... I've just done the same. Try Arts and Letters Daily in PIE and in
Opera... Awesom.

Werner \Menneisyys\ Ruotsalainen [MVP - Windows - Mobile Devices] 06-06-2006, 02:12 AM TYup, Opera Mobile is certainly worth purchasing. Check out my latest Web
browser reviews in my blog for more info.

Daboo 06-06-2006, 01:19 PM I found Webby to be useful. It is a plug-in to PIE and for whatever
reasons, seems to render pages quicker. Perhaps that is because it has
several viewing layouts using the native layout, a "Desktop" layout,
Skweezer, Google, Mobile Leap and Web Warper. The size of the
application is minimal, only 231.5K.
You also get the tabbed browsing that is so helpful.
And it is free.
When Opera Mobile beta was out, I used it several times, but found
myself using Webby more often, even though both were free at that time.
I just found Webby very easy to use and with all the layouts, it was
able to render any web page I came across. When the Opera beta test
finished, I loaded the release version and found it was no longer
freeware and immediately uninstalled it. It was a no-brainer for me.
There was no compelling reason to use a program that cost me $24 to buy
and wouldn't even transfer in my bookmarks/favorites.
The original releases of Webby were slow and consumed a lot of PDA
resources. However, it has been much faster now in the later releases
to the extent I've had it out perform many other browsers in a simple
test I did once.
I think it is worth considering.

Werner \Menneisyys\ Ruotsalainen [MVP - Windows - Mobile Devices] 06-07-2006, 03:49 AM At last, I had the time to fully scrutinize the latest (06/02) build of
Webby.
The high transfer/rendering speed you've listed is because, by default,
Webby uses the Google Web microbrowser (View/Layout), which really reduces
(t about one-tenth) the information transferred. If you switch to either
Off (the stndard "fit to screen") or Desktop, then, no Web compression will
take place. Then, Webby becomes slightly slower than PIE/IEM itself.
BTW, the new version is indeed definitely faster than 2.0.x versions. Expect
a thorough review really soon.

AMD2800 06-10-2006, 05:43 PM I hear what you say.
But I am happy with Opera I have several tabs open at once and with vga on
my Loox 720 it is really good. So much so I have installed Opera from PC
Format June issue and use it on my laptop.
Although I installed IE 7. Even IE 7 will not take me to my PocketGear
download page and let me download my programmes.
Opera does not tested on laptop yet.

Werner \Menneisyys\ Ruotsalainen [MVP - Windows - Mobile Devices] 06-11-2006, 05:13 AM Webby indeed has its advantages. I would, however, really recommend my
review of the latest, 2.5 version so that you can see whether it fits your
needs.
(I'd go with Opera Mobile AND PIEPlus 2.0 myself.)
