I've updated all the latest ROMs, Firmwares and patches on my HP
RX1950, but the program memory still leaks when opening/stopping even
the simplest built-in programs like "Notes". Here is some data:
Program memory before soft-reset:
Total: 23.68
In Use: 15.47
Free: 8.21
35%
Program memory after soft-reset:
Total: 23.68
In Use: 10.86
Free: 12.82
55%
Thats a huge amount of memory lost. If I start and stop something
simple like "Notes" I'll lose about 20KB each time. IE and WMP will
lose me about 500KB. I start out with about 55% free memory and over
about 2-3 days of very light usage it drops to 35% or less. If I don't
soft-reset, running IE and WMP at the same time causes low-memory
popups.
Is HP or Microsoft aware of this?

Well, resetting once every 2-3 days isn't a problem IMHO. I reset my PDA's
much more frequently.
Unfortunately, you have to live with memory leaks. There is nothing you can
do to avoid them.

I bought SPB backup which I run everyday and which reboots each time. Since
then I rarely do any other reboots becasue of lockups. Huge difference.

I have had the same experience with my rx1950. Using Magic Button is a
great help. The latest SKtools has a nice feature called "Freeup RAM",
that restores your precious RAM with a single tap. Highly recommended!

I think you are seeing a combination of a couple things. People with
more expertise like Werner could confirm this, or tell me I'm nuts.
Right after a soft reset, it appears that you have more available RAM
than later. As soon as you open the menu, you loose some. I think
what is happening, is that the operating system is storing the data for
later in a cache of some sort. If you'll notice, the initial time you
do this, there is a significant pause. After that first time, the
response is almost instantaneous. The same thing happens when you open
the Programs or Settings windows. Initially, they paint the screen
very slowly as the OS reads the data. After that, the response is
again, instantaneous.
Is that a memory leak, or just the way the OS caches data to speed
things up for you?
The other thing that happens, is that programs are put on a standby
mode in the background. As one other person wrote, try Magic Button.
It worked great on my rx1955. It will actually stop programs that are
running in the background and perhaps give you a little more memory.
For the most part, I had about the same amount of RAM that you are
finding. The only problems I had were in opening programs that
required a certain amount of RAM free before starting. The golf game
offered on Avantgo was one of those and required 10 MB free before it
would load. Doing a soft reset in those cases took care of the
problem.
I was surprised to find the OS managed the limited RAM so well though.
I use my PDA primarily for running Pocket eSword, a freeware Bible
program. Just opening the program used a couple megs of RAM. When I
wanted to do a full Bible search though, that would consume about 10
megs of RAM on my rx3115. Somehow it was able to do the same thing on
about 8 megs of RAM on the rx1955.
So the small amount of RAM may be a perception that the marketing folks
will tell us is a problem, but that I didn't find to be a reality.
Good luck,
Chris

Get an MDA Vario - they reboot themselves all the time to save you the
hassle!
