Hi
I am trying to figure out if you can change the balance of memory which is
allocated to storage and program.
My storage memory is running low but my program memory still has 33MB free
so I want to know if i can change the balance and give some of that spare
program memory to my storage memory, as you could do this in previous
versions of Window Mobile but I can't find that setting in the new version.
If anyone knows help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hello,
This is not something that can be changed in Windows Mobile 5. Unlike
previous versions, WM5 uses ROM for file storage and uses RAM for actual
application running (previous versions used RAM for both).
Hope this helps,

How is this so? as the hardware hasn't changed only the operating system??

The hardware hasn't changed, but it is being used differently. To
reword what Clinton said; in previous versions of the OS, your RAM was
split, part being used as "hard-disk" (i.e. storage) and part being
used as "normal RAM" (i.e. program memory), to use desktop-equivalent
terminology. Thus you could adjust that split.
In WM5 however, all your RAM is used as "normal RAM", the part of
"hard-disk" is now played by your flash ROM. Since all your RAM is
already program memory, there is no split to adjust. The flash ROM
that now serves as "storage memory" can't be used as program memory,
it's way too slow, apart from anything else.

Best bet is to purchase some removable storage (CompactFlash, SecureDigital,
whatever your machine will take), and use that for storage. Most people
have the opposite issue, I think. Not enough program space. At least,
that's the case if I'm using the same definitions as you. :)
And in many WM5 machines, at least the ones that are "pure" WM5 (as opposed
to upgraded), the hardware HAS changed. On many of these machines, the
Program memory is no longer battery backed up, so if your battery goes dead,
or you swap out a battery, everything in the Program memory gets wiped out.
Not a big deal, if you're just using it for running applications, although
you'd want to make sure you'd saved your documents first. But if you've got
a bunch of stuff stored on there that you thought was safe as your WM2003SE
machine, you might be unpleasantly surprised.
