View Full Version : Which PDA have the strongest CPU. Which one have the biggest screen?
zalek 05-21-2006, 10:34 AM I am growing up - my iPAQ 4700 stays the same. What will be a good
replacement for my iPAQ? Does not have to be PocketPC, I am familiar
will Linux and ready to learn Palm.
Thanks,
Zalek
Werner Ruotsalainen - MVP - Windows MobDev 05-21-2006, 11:02 AM Given that Pocket PC manufacturers aren't really interested in producing
real PDA's any more, the x4700 is still one of the best PDA's (if not the
best), particularly now that I've managed to fix its biggest problems under
WM5. The only worrthy alternative is, in my opinion, the Fujitsu-Siemens
N560. (I wouldn't recommend the Dell Axim x51v. much as it's cheap, its
srceen and battery life is , to put it mildyly, not the best - you'll hate
it if you want tthe same quality as with the 4700).
Therefore, I think you could have a look at the N560 or just stay with the
hx4700 - it's completely up-to-date with my latest bugfixes.

Few questions:
What advantages gives WM5 over WM2003 SE?
What are problems in WM5 you solved?
I bought SKTools, changed some options and I have impression that my
iPAQ is little faster now.

Clinton Fitch [MVP-Mobile Devices] 05-21-2006, 04:59 PM Respectfully disagree on the x51v screen. I personally find it quite
readable and easy on the eyes.
As for battery life, would agree, it isn't the greatest.

You missed the non-volatile memory. In my opinion the biggest reason to like
WM5. No longer do you need to be concerned about the battery running down.
All your stuff is retained. Yea you can backup and restore, but that still
takes time on both ends and it is never exactly how you left it.

Steve L 05-21-2006, 11:15 PM I would agree. I 'upgraded' to a Qtek2020i (XDA2 equiv) to get the phone
feature but it's no where near as good as the 4700. The phone - PDA
combination is , IMHO, is not the answer to life the universe and everything
as it's cracked up to be.

Werner \Menneisyys\ Ruotsalainen [MVP - Windows - Mobile Devices] 05-22-2006, 01:07 AM Yup, user opinions certainly differ on the x50v/x51v screen. About half of
the voting AximSite members have reported no problems at all with the
screen, while the other half reported the same as I in my blog entry at
http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=578&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1
.. It's fully user-dependent if he/she is sensitive to the uneven
polarization in Landscape mode. (In Portrait, the x51v screen has no
issues - apart from being not very contrasty.)
See http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=115846 and
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=118987 for more info/related
debates.

One side effect of the the non-volatile memory use is that program launch is
a bit slower. I personally think the tradeoff is far worth it, but if the
OP is a speed freak it might be something to consider.
Werner \Menneisyys\ Ruotsalainen [MVP - Windows - Mobile Devices] 05-22-2006, 02:16 PM Also take into account that writing into flash ROM-based storage is
definitely slower than with RAM, which, in cases, may be a major bottleneck
(for example, this is why the WM5 version of Internet Explorer is definitely
slower - see the benchmarks in my blog - than its WM2003SE predecessor if
you don't relocate its cache onto a well-optimized storage card). In
addition, on non-native WM5 devices running WM5 (hx4700 / x50), you'll also
have to deal with the problem of compaction (filesys.exe).

yleas 05-24-2006, 08:01 PM One must never forget to mention one of the greatest PocketPC's ever made,
the Loox 720. As for the Axims poor battery, that is easily remedied by
using a Mugen 1800 Mah extended battery which is only slightly bigger than
the standard battery.
I cannot recommend the Loox N560 much due to the lack of CF. I like using my
6GB CF along with my 1GB SD, any PocketPC that lacks this simply gives the
user less options for expansion.

Werner Ruotsalainen - MVP - Windows MobDev 05-25-2006, 01:17 AM If you *do* use CF, that is :)
Lately, I have completely switched to using SD's (they are cheaper as of now
and, mostly, even faster too) and wouldn't miss the CF slot any more.
In addition, the N560 is a woonderful little device. I'll write a complete
review and comparison of it when I have some free time.
