View Full Version : can not access Subdirectories in Applications

In Word or Excel or anyother application I can only view One tier
directories. For example if you have Word open and you need to access a file
on a SD card sdcard\folder\subfolder all you can access thru applications
are the 1st tier folders you can not access subfolders. Is there a fix for
this. Because I am using an application to download text files to CNC's each
program is under a different subdirectory
Example: sdcard\department\company\partnumber

Currently I would only be able to access the department folder but non of
the Subfolders such as company or partnumber. Does anyone know of a fix?

IT is a limitation of the applications themselves, not the OS. You can get
around it by using a file explorer (Total Commander, Resco, etc.) to browse
to the folders you need and launch the files. Basically just ignore Word or
Excel file dialogs and use it instead.

From a programmin standpoint you can access the entire file structure, so if
it is an app that someone wrote have them dig deeper or not use the common
dialog.

in addition, you did not mention your os version.

While the 200x os versions would see only the storage card's "My
Documents" folder and one level below, wm5 can only see the card root
and one level below.

Just to be sure about WM5 - In the application file dialogs, yes. But even
the stock WM5 File explorer can see the entire file structure depth. So it
is not a problem of the OS as much as it is a problem of the WM5 MS office
applications and an incredibly poor implementation of a file listing dialog
in said applications - does the mobile office team even use their own
products?

Ok I have WM4.21 but I think you may have missunderstood what I need. The
application I am using is called vxHplus it is a telnet software that allows
you to send or capture text files. In order to send a text file I need to
beable to go down 5 levels. The company that makes this software is
Cambridge I contacted them about this issue and they stated it was an OS
design because the software vxHplus uses the same software Word and Excel
use to browse for files which they stated was embedded.

Because of the nature of the software I need to beable to go down 5 levels
with in it not thru the explorer but within the software it's self. Are
there any fixes or add ons that would allow you to do this within
applications and not have to go thru explorer

Contact vxHplus, chastise them royally for using the common dialog box that
has been horrible since CE was introduced (and apparently has only gotten
worse), and start looking for a better telnet software - several have been
mentioned in the newsgroup recently. A program that uses files as a major
function of it operation should have improved its file handling long ago.

The common file dialog has been an ongoing problem, and some atttempts (such
as tgetfile) has been introduced as a workaround. I typically write my own
file dialogs (as do a lot of developers on Pocket PC ) due to these
shortcomings.

But to have a company write it off as an OS issue is a complete cop out.
Get better software from developers who actually want to sell software,or
even better that actually use their own software.

OK I would suggest that you download and install, FileDialogChanger
http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-Cupertino/2039/filedlgchg.zip and
gsGetFile.dll
http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-Cupertino/2039/gsgetfile-i.zip
Download to your PC and unzip the find the version for your PocketPC
generally the arm version (in the ARMRel folder) and copy to your /windows
folder on the pocket PC. Soft reset your pocket PC and go to | Start (menu)
| Settings | System | File Dialog Changer | and check "Exchange Standard
Dialog" Tap | OK| X | and soft reset your Pocket PC.

the programs are here,
http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-Cupertino/2039/
this should allow vxHplus to do what you want I believe.

Careful... might hurt some feelings with questions like that <grin>

You are absolutely right that other programs and utilities can see the
entire file structure.

The biggest problem with this snafu is visited on those of us who
migrated from earlier os' and transferred our cards from 200x devices to
wm5 devices, then tried to find files from within "compliant"
applications such as pword, pexcel and pstreets.

We immediately couldn't find anything in the card's "My Documents"
subfolders and, in my case, the folder and file selection was jammed by
the many root folders I had evolved over the years.

On the comment that wm5 operated like older devices which had the
"ignore_my_docs" flag file, I finally sat down and started rearranging
my primary card's folder structure;

1 - I moved all root folders to a single folder off of the root named "Gen"

2 - I moved the entire contents (including folders) of the card's "My
Documents" folder to the card root.

3 - I deleted the card's "My Documents" folder.

When finished, wm5 and "compliant" apps were able to access the files as
they could in older os's

By removing the "My Documents" folder, the older os's responded with the
"ignore_my_docs" flag file, so, rather than trying to get wm5 to operate
like other ppc os's with respect to the memory card, the only workable
solution I have found is to get the older devices to act like wm5 by
rearranging memory card files as above.

Ah, yes. That would be a mess.

<rant>

I can understand the desire to move away from My Documents on a storage
card. I just cannot figure out why they would make the change without
beefing up the common file dialog to allow previous versions to work without
a problem. As you point out, storage cards ARE interchangeable, and many
places will have mixed 2003 and WM5 devices.
