View Full Version : windows mobile 2003 upgrade?
johnw 02-20-2006, 03:49 PM I have an hp5555 and just got an sd wifi card. Now I find out that it can
only be used with WM2003. Is there a way to upgrade my PPC 2002 to WM 2003?
so I can get the wifi working?
if you will post the brand and model of your card, someone may be able to
point you towards a driver that will work with wm2002.

Erm, are you sure you aren't already running WM2003? Looks to me like
that's what the h5555 was shipped with.

Says right on the back of the ipaq -- PocketPC 2002 Prem. w/outlook 2000
the sd card is a SPECTEC SDW-820 SDIO Wireless LAN Card
Thanks for any and all help!
johnw 02-20-2006, 09:54 PM Well, now that I look inside the back of the ipaq, it is an hp5545... All
this time I thought it was a 5555.

Tony A. 02-21-2006, 06:57 AM I don't seem to see a 5545 listed at HP, do you perchance really mean
a 5455? If so, I notice that it's listed as having built in 802.11b
wireless networking, so you shouldn't need the SD card at all. Can you
confirm the model#? Here's links to the manuals & specs for the 5455
in case that's what you have -

johnw via PocketPCJunkies.com 02-21-2006, 10:16 AM yes, please excuse the aixelsyd (dyslexia). It IS a 5455. I've never been
able to get the wifi to work though. Someone told me I had to have an sd
card to get it to work. That's what I get for listening to people that don't
know what they are talking about. I've followed the setup directions in the
manual that you sent, but I still get an error message "unable to obtain a
server assigned IP address. Try again later or enter an IP address in
Network settings."

Tony A. 02-21-2006, 11:57 AM Well, you're into regular wlan troubleshooting at this point, I'm not
a big expert, so hopefully one of our all-knowing MVPs will chime in
here ;). It should be just a case of getting a few settings right to
match your wireless router. Try temporarily turning off WEP in your
router, and see if you can connect.
However, if your wireless access point/router supports 802.1G as well
as B, then check this link - http://tinyurl.com/nkq5m. I guess this
guide duplicates the wlan instructions in the manual, but just in
case - http://tinyurl.com/4ryv4.

johnw via PocketPCJunkies.com 02-21-2006, 02:52 PM Thanks for all of your help. I do have 802.1G, and did the updates and
everything, resets, etc. from the link you posted. I'm still getting the
same error message. I guess I'll have to find my ip address and go that
route. Any other suggestions are welcomed and appreciated!
Thanks,
John

Just one more - as a test set your wireless router to temporarily accept B
devices only. This might help to determine if the pathces were applied
correctly for the bug. Also, do as Tony suggests and temporarily turn off
WEP and see if it can then connect, if not already. You may have, but you
don't mention it above.
johnw via PocketPCJunkies.com 02-22-2006, 04:05 PM WEP is off, no go. How do I set the router to temp. accept "B"?

What kind of router is it? It varies by manufacturer and model.
However, typically the selection is G only, B and G, or B Only. If you have
not found this setting yet then I would suspect that B devices might not be
permitted on the current setup, which could be the problem.
johnw via PocketPCJunkies.com 02-22-2006, 04:45 PM It's a netgear mr814. My laptop is a 'b' and it works with that.

Well, since your laptop is a B only it pretty much makes it an exercise in
futility.
You might try setting up a fixed address on the PPC and see if that allows
you to connect. You do not say for certain, but there is a chance that your
laptop is running a fixed IP and DHCP is off.
At this point I would try another access point, if you have not done so
already.
