View Full Version : Still same on and off on and off USB sound

Atreju

I posted a while ago about this, but it is still happening, and
driving me absolutely insane!

I have a Pocket PC 2003 iPaq hx2410. Using latest Activesync 3.8

When I hookup, I like to shut the unit off after I've synched so I can
just have the battery charge without the unit having to stay on.

Every minute or two, BLLLING..... BLLONG. The USB activate/deactivate
sounds come on again and again and again and again and again and
again!!!! Sometimes it even turns on the unit! No calendar items or
alarms set to these intervals, of course.

AAARRRRRGGGHHHH. It is SO DAMN IRRITATING!!

Anyone heard of this problem, and please, a solution?

Other info:

Windows XP Pro, all latest updates/patches. Just installed Latest AS
no help. Pocket PC 2003 SE. I am not using the cradle, I am using a
straight cable because I have my unit in a Rhinoskin and it is not
really designed for constant removal and reinsertion, the padding
would wear out very quickly.

If there's any other info anyone wants to know, ask. PS NOT using
Windows Firewall.

You have tried a different cable AND host usb port?

Asa test pull it out of the case, stick it in the cradle and see if it
still happens. That or use another cable. I have found that some
aftermarket USB cables are a bit flaky when it comes to the connection.

And if this was mentioned the last time just ignore it.

I have tried different USB ports, several times. As for the cable, it
is not an aftermarket cable, it is an HP cable which came from a
previous iPaq, but is said to be compatible. I'm fairly certain the
same one (part number) is sold for any iPaq units of the hx family. In
addition, the actual connector, which houses the pins, comes as a
spare part with most iPaqs and that part is the same part number.

Hi,

Have you set ActiveSync to sync continuously or manually?

Ok, then take a look at ActiveSync Toggle -
http://micrologics.co.uk/library/ast/ to unload ActiveSync from memory which
initiates the connection.

curious, if you DO you the cradle instead of the cable, does the same thing
happen ? My old Ipaq 3955 works great in the cradle, but has a very hard
time getting and keeping a connection using a charger cable or sync cable.
I just thing the connectors are worn out, and a cradle is the only thing
that keeps them all aligned perfectly. - just a thought.

Take a look at http://BevHoward.com/ASync.htm#WCESCOMM and
http://BevHoward.com/ASync.htm#RAPI

In addition, I edited the wav files to create "quiet copies" of the
activesync notification boings... on the pc

start/settings/control../sounds/sounds/microsoftactivesync

you can edit the files using sndrec32... I reduced their volume so they
were barely audible as it's sometimes necessary to know if a connect has
been accomplished.

From a strictly troubleshooting stance the only thing I can read from the
above is that you have not tried a different cable...

If the sound you're getting is definitely the USB insertion sound, not
the ActiveSync sync sound, then chances are it's not ActiveSync
problem (for once :D ), although I suppose disabling ActiveSync will
prove that one way or another.

Assuming it's not down to AS, and assuming you have other USB devices
that don't cause the same issue, my next stop would be to try a
different cable.

Great writeup.

I was hung up on the OP that stated "every minute or two", not the longer
time period between AS doing its wackyful thing. However, it could have
been a perceived minute or two in the OP, not literal.

I know I could do that, but it should not be required. This will then
make me have to actively do something every time I want to sync. This
is not how it is designed to behave. I'm looking for a solution not a
work-around. I do appreciate the link though. It might be useful until
I can find a solution.

It is, in fact, varying from every 30 seconds to every 1 to 2 minutes.
Sometimes only the USB in-out sounds happen, and sometimes the
Activesync sync-up-sync-down sounds happen. Always in a quick
succession. Literally.

It is sometimes only USB and sometimes AS as well.
I suspect that its little soire that it is having sometimes lasts long
enough to get to that point and sometimes not. I suspect AS only
because the unit does not turn on.

Make sure that you don't have any power saving set on the USB hubs in device
manager. Also, make sure you haven't got a sync schedule set up.

Don't understand that leap. AS wouldn't even try to connect if it didn't see
a USB connection...unless you have it set to connect every so often in the
server sync section.
