is there any risk in the file conversion setting in active sync going back
and forward to ppc - is there a risk any content is lost?

The short answer is YES, primarily with word and excel files. The
problem is semiofficially know as "round tripping"

If a file generated on a PC uses any features which are not supported on
the PPC and that file is modified on the PPC, the modified file will not
contain the unsupported features when it is synced back to the PC and
replaces the PC copy of the file.

I believe PWord was finally modified to at least warn the user that this
is about to happen, but afaik, there is no protection in pexcel. I am
not using advanced features, so I am not 100% sure of the current state
of affairs.

David,

Generally speaking no - the problem is that on some files (Word, Excel) will
loose formatting or functionality due to the conversion process. This is
due to the limited functionality of the mobile versions of these
applications.

I'd recommend making a backup copy of your file in question, transfer it to
your device, and verify all is well going to and from the device. That's
the best and most reliable way to verify.

Hope this helps,
