View Full Version : Might be looking for a PocketPC companion
Bible John 02-08-2006, 11:40 PM As much as I believe that the Palm is the superior platform, I have come to
realize that Palms are organizers and PPC's are computers. I have also come
to realization that PPC's are far more sophisticated (can access networks,
the web, email, etc). So for fun I may want to buy myself a PPC to play with.
But I would need one that would be equal to that of my Zire 72. Below is
what my Zire 72 can do and what I would need a PPC for. So please only
recommend equal models.
Zire 72 is also 306 mhz and uses an Arm CPU. Its a bit sluggish when using
the Picture and video built in app. So perhaps a PPC with a faster CPU would
be essential. Especially since the PPC os is more sophisticated.
1. Record audio at the touch of a button on the unit. Very helpful when I
am driving. The Zire can record audio instantly, can a PPC?
2. Play music (I have about 50 songs on my Zire)
3. Open all my Zire's pictures, movies, and audio files. Also it would be
nice to get a PPC that can also take pictures and video. My Zire has a
1.2MP camera built in
4. I have 5 Twilight Zone episodes and 1 feature length film on my Zire.
Can a PPC read all of these? They are in .avi format.
5. Open all my Word/Excel files. But I have to wonder if a PPC can read the
Zire's docs to go format
6. PIM
7. Open Acrobat files
8. Play NES games
I'm sure I must have left out something.

Yes, almost all PPCs can do that and have a special button for that. Even in
the few PPCs (1 or 2) that have been built without such a button, you can
assign this function to an unused button in the device.
> 2. Play music (I have about 50 songs on my Zire)
I have around 200 songs in mp3 and wmv formats in my SD card at the Pocket
PC. If you enjoy music, you will enjoy using the device.

All modern PPCs have Photo Album functionality. And there are many PPCs with
camera, you just have to choose the right one for you.

You will probably need PocketTV, which is free.

To work with original DOC/XLS, you should go for a device with WM5. Older
devices demand conversion of the files, which is automatic and in many cases
damages the files. Unfortunately I can't answer about Docs to go....
> 6. PIM
Pocket Outlook.
> 7. Open Acrobat files
Westtek Clearvue PDF comes included in many devices. In others, you will
have to buy it.
> 8. Play NES games
I am not sure about this one, but I think I have seen PocketNES somewhere...

Bible John 02-10-2006, 01:29 AM Thanks. When I get the money I might buy a PPC spare.
