View Full Version : Used PPC vs HPC...

Hi,

I currently have a Casio E-100 (had it since '99) and a couple Casio
BE-300's.

I like pushing them to their limits, but the Casio E-100 (WinCE 2.11) is
really beginning to show it's age and becoming impractical.

I'm now wanting to replace the E-100, but not break the bank doing so. I
don't need the "newest and greatest" and certainly don't want any of the
current cell phone + PDA hybrids out there now.

Stuff I mainly use them for is network related, (web, email, mp3 streaming,
VNC to desktops, ect) whether in public or at home on my WLAN. Also listen
to audible books often while driving. As web sites became more and more
complex each day, the E-100 quickly became impractical for web. Actually,
pretty much doing anything network related is like trying to nail jello to a
tree with the E-100.

I did a little research on older PDA's, starting with the Casio E-200, which
at first seemed like the natural choice as it was the last (?) Cassiopeia,
but the Casio E-125 actually looks more attractive. (Brighter and larger
screen, very similiar to my old E-100, much of my E-100 software will work
on it , ect.)

I was dead set on a Casio E-125, until something else caught my eye: HP
Jornada 720 "Handheld PC".

What I really like about the HP Jornada 720 is the built-in keyboard and the
screen, of course. Its really about as close to a mini-laptop that you can
get.

I know what to expect with the Casio E-125, but I've never used a HPC and
"Windows for Handheld PC 2000". Seems to be plenty of stuff archived on the
web to get much use out of it though.

Anyone still using one of these older HPC's for network stuff? Any insights
on potential disadvantages with them over a PPC?

I'm not concerned about devices that have been discontinued and are no
longer supported. I'm just concerned with being a cheap skate.

Thanks!
-Eric

The version of Pocket Internet Explorer on even the latest devices
(running WM 5) have problems with many sites. I'm pretty sure I've
seen several discussions in this newsgroup, but can't think of a good
search string. But if you're thinking an update will help much, you
probably need to think again.

If the main motivation is the keyboard, you could also get a Palm-size
PC or Pocket PC and an external keyboard

Hi,

Thanks! Great site! Searched and read through a bit of the forums and many
of my questions, asked by others, were answered.
I went with a J720 and look forward to frequenting and contributing to
http://www.hpcfactor.com

Cheers,

Eric I would strongly suggest you check out my Jornada 720 screenshots. None
exist on hpcfactor to my knowledge.

Yes look at my screenshots and see that I am using the Jornada 720 to
network with my ibook, access my Unix server, among other things.

Well done. But those screenshots do not show the following.

1. Third party apps
Photo Viewer-http://johnw.freeshell.org/graphics/hpc/8.GIF
RYR
http://johnw.freeshell.org/graphics/hpc/Reveal%20your%20Rank.bmp
Resco File Explorer
http://johnw.freeshell.org/graphics/hpc/rfe1.jpg

2. They do not answer the question some have on whether an HPC can access a
network or use wifi
3. They do not show a registry editor
http://johnw.freeshell.org/graphics/hpc/registry.jpg

Also a correction to your comment on your page Clinton.

"HPC2000 Command Console"

It should be noted that the Command Console from the HPC Pro had more
commands! Remember Netstat, and the other network commands that are lacking
on the 720?

The 680 also had an ability to run debuggers among other things lacking on
the 720.

Bible John,

Awesome screenies! Thats exactly what I was looking towards and will surely
use the J720 for similiar type stuff (fileshares, making use of the terminal
emulator, etc). I ordered a J720 a couple days ago and am currently just
(anxiously) waiting for it to arrive. :^)

Thanks again,
Eric
