View Full Version : I need Pocket PC for an Ipaq
Chris 02-08-2006, 03:07 PM Hi everyone,
I 'inherited' my other half's Ipaq 3870, and wanted to set it up on my
computer too here at home, but alas, the original Pocket PC software that
came with it is nowhere to be found. So, not knowing anything about mobile
devices, I looked around for Pocket PC 2002, which was what was run on my
spouses computer, but of course i can't find it.
So, can I get some software somewhere or is this a lost cause and I just
need to buy a new device?
I appreciate any help and sorry for such a basic question,
Chris

If you're looking for the Pocket PC operating system, it's built into
the device unless there's something seriously wrong with it. Does the
device power on? Perhaps it only needs charging.
If you mean there's nothing installed on your system at home that will
communicate with the device, I suspect you're looking for activesync.

No, it's not a lost cause. There are two main things you need that
would have been on that CD - ActiveSync (allows the device to link
with the PC) and Outlook (not to be confused with Outlook Express),
which you need to use on your desktop for email, contacts etc if you
want to sychronize them with the device.
ActiveSync is a free download, the correct version for your device is
at the link below. If you already have Microsoft Office 2000 or newer,
then you have Outlook covered. If not, then you can probably pick up a
used copy from ebay, Outlook 2000 should be pretty cheap. You need
Outlook 2000 or newer.

Chris 02-08-2006, 04:33 PM O, I see. I was having a problem with my computer recognizing it like you
mentioned. I downloaded activesynch and nothing thru my serial connection,
switched it to a usb and fianlly, the activesynch came on and I got it going
now. Thanks! But, as I'm a new user, how to I clean the slate so to speak
and start from the beginning with a new name for example? When I got
activesynch to work, it's still shows the old name and all the old
emails/contacts etc. How to reboot it to stock?
Thanks for the quick reply JH! I'm almost there lol and feel a bit
embarrassed not knowing it was installed only on the handheld. Again, Thanks!

Brian McMullen 02-08-2006, 05:07 PM You can do a hard reset and the device will be restored to it's original
configuration. It's usually some variation of a 3 fingered salute on the
face buttons while hitting the soft reset button with the stylus. You can
google hard reset along with your device type and find out which buttons to
hit.
Good Luck

Chris 02-08-2006, 06:56 PM Thanks everyone! I got the hard reboot done and renamed. Excellent!
I've only used Microsoft's newsgroups a few times and each time generous
members have come thru for me
Thanks so much!

since the OP has their answer
I am new to this game (ipaq 5550) and thought that outlook
used on PPC was "cut down" type version?
Can I install my outlook from office (2000 premium) straight
onto the PPC?
If yes, are there other standard products where the same
situation would apply?
thanks Geoff
Beverly Howard [Ms-MVP/MobileDev] 03-14-2006, 11:41 PM all of the outlook "pim" (personal information manager) apps are
permanently installed in pocketpc's roms...
The references to needing "Outlook 2000" are because that pc program is
the key data part of the pc's "sync" process used to exchange contacts
and other data from the pc to the ppc and vise versa.

thanks Beverly
in regard to outlook then this would also include that part
necessary to send email (eg) or is this type of function
built into the OS

You can send and receive email using any mobile connection using the
default software on any ppc... no connection to a pc or outlook on the
pc is needed for this.
Outlook can, however, be used to "sync" email received using outlook on
the pc...
....for example, outlook downloads email at home for the night and you
"sync" before you go to work or read the email on your pc... you can
then read that email at any time on the ppc without needing a
connection. If you respond to any of those synced emails using your
ppc, they will be sent the next time you sync with outlook using activesync.
