View Full Version : Storage memory problems
StainlessSteelRat 02-07-2006, 06:06 AM Hi folks,
I'm continually running low on storage memory, and trying to figure out what
data is using most of the space. Is there a program similar to the PC's
Treesize which will scan the memory of the PDA and show where it's being
used? (in terms of files and folders) PDAs never seem to be great at
reporting exactly what is using memory. Further confused by the tree
structure that Activesync shows.
Also is there a way to move My Documents, other than just copying the files
elsewhere? I assume that My Documents is located in PDA's main memory, which
seems a slightly daft design idea (unless you have no other storage of
course).
TIA
Clinton Fitch [MVP-Mobile Devices] 02-07-2006, 09:22 AM Hello,
If I understand your question correctly, you can go to
Start>Settings>System>Memory the choose the "Find Large Files" option at the
bottom of the screen. This will tell you the size and location of files on
your device.
As for moving My Documents, I still don't there there is a way to do this.
Pre-WM5, you couldn't really move it if you want to sync and ActiveSync
could only see the My Documents folder on the root of the device. I
believe - but not 100% sure - that is the case in WM5 as well.
Hope this helps,

Ah! I was being a twit and had spotted this before. It helped a bit and I
moved 4 or 5 files I'd placed in My Documents, but I'd still love to see a
Treesize type program and more logical browsing on the device, that is with
all three memory areas (main memory, built-in storage, and storage cards) in
the root of the explorer.

When there's such limited space in the main memory it does seem a bizarre
design decision to have an unmovable system folder there. Almost as bizarre
as the inability to close some programs ;-)
Thanks for the reply :-)
Clint 02-07-2006, 10:39 AM Try MemMaid. It's got a Storage Usage tab, which can display as a TreeView
or as a chart. I was just checking out mine today.

My favorite app for this is called "Where is My RAM?" It lets you look
at each folder and file and see mow much memory each is hogging. You
can find it here:

Thanks for the reply, this looks excellent! Exactly what I was after :-)

If you haven't already do this:
1. Go to Settings\System\Memory and note available memory
1. Open Pocket IE
2. Go to Tools/options/memory and click on "delete Files"
3. Go to Settings\System\Memory and see how it changed.
4. Repeat as necessary.
5. Following up with a conditioner is not advised, since it would probably
ruin the device. ;)
There are hacks to move the IE cache to a storage card, but I have had
issues in the past that I feel fairly certain I can attribute to this
modification. Personal experience may vary.
Clint's advice about MemMaid is great advice IMHO. If you are having issues
or just curious it would be worthwhile to try it. Please note that Memmaid
does have the option for the IE cache to Storage card modification as well
as other niceties.
Good Luck

Thanks for the advice, coincidentally I just cleared the IE cache using
MemMaid but it was only 200kb or so. The problem seems to be a few
applications that were installed in the main memory *before* I was savvy to
it. I have made a list, and will uninstall those and see if it makes a
difference. The confusion arise as the in-built storage and expansion card
seem to be subsets of the main memory in the Explorer type listing. At least
I'm assuming that files stored in the My Windows Mobile Based Device\Program
Files directory are on the main memory.

I saw that MemMaid can do this.

I'll have go with this also and see how it compares. Thanks for the advice!

I just freed 20Mb, so answering my own question this is definitely where
most of the space had gone :-)

You don't need to delete the My Documents in Main Memory.
Just create another My Documents folder in the root of your storage card and
move everything out of the My Documents in Main Memory to the directory you
just created on your card. All applications will find the directory just as
if it were in Main Memory.
You don't really need Activesync to see the My Documents folder on your
storage card. If you want to make a back up, just copy the files over to
your PC manually.
HTH
Martin
resco file explorer will give you a file explorer very similar to windows
(desktop) download the trial and see if it suits your needs.
