jarodjoe,

from what I have heard, the TomTom navigator software is pretty good.
the updates to the software make it compatible with WM5? I've used the
mapping software with the TomTomGo 300 and I have had great success.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

If you just need to view maps, Pocket Streets (which is included in MS
Streets and Trips) is both a good viewer and very inexpensive... as low
as $25 in some cases.

In addition to things such as address and places lookup, once installed
on the ppc, contacts offers a "show address" which will attempt a lookup
of any contact's address on the last map used.

It depend on what you want to spend. If you want a lot of power but are
willnig to spend a butt load of money, Tom Tom is great. However, if
you'd like a very good program, Streets and Trips is $15 at Costco and
comes with free Pocket Streets.

One issue that I have come across so far is some of the web sites optimized
for PIE. They either display with different alignments, or have character
problems.

Just wanted to note that most of the navigation packages sold will work just
fine without a GPS. You would still get the advantage of the application
generating a route for you and in most cases you can step through the route
manually and have the directions spoken to you. You would only lose the
automatic aspect allowed by the GPS, as the program wouldn't know where you
actually are.

That said, what you want this mapping thing to do for you, and what you want
to spend is an important consideration.

One product that does give you the option of some navigation capability
without the GPS functions, for a reasonable price is Mapopolis. The have a
Platinum version for $34, that certainly does more than Pocket Streets. A
comparison chart between it and their full nav package ($99) is at
http://www.mapopolis.com/features.jsp?s=1136655636855106&p=&q=2 It is hard
to tell if the Platinum version has any text to speech features. It
indicates it does not provide a voice prompt before each turn, but I'm not
sure that implies it has no speech capability. The Navigator certainly does
speech, and can be manually triggered if you have no GPS.

yeah there are definitely cheaper options out there. i'm fortunate to
have been able to use the tele atlas maps for the tom tom and i
definitely think there is a lot of bang for the buck...i've yet to
experience a situation where i got lost with the tomtom gps.
