Just notice my i-mate JASJAR GSM i got in the UK just has the $ symbol and
no £ symbol. Dont have version with a £ symbol?

I also note that <Fn-D> on the hardware keyboard generates a pound sign.

Ace thanks mate that worked. Yup i did the settings for the UK and still no
£ sign. Yes keyboard just has the $ sign.

Did you try the hardware keyboard <Fn-D>? It works for me.
Also, the soft keyboard "AU" key has it as well.
