Given the iPAQ's sound capability, I assumed that it would be able to do
audio over MSN Messenger. Yet I can see no way to start this. When I
initiate a connection from a PC to the iPAQ, there's no indication on the
iPAQ that the PC is asking for a "voice conversation".

Does the iPAQ do audio in MSN Messenger?

No, VOIP is not possible with the PPC version of Messenger. You can, however, look into using MS Portrait. I use
Portrait to talk to my brother wireless iPAQ 3650 to wireless iPAQ 3835 once or twice a week. It, audio, works very well
over our 56 Kbps dialup links. Of course our LANs are both 10/100 Mbps... Video, on the other hand, is pretty poor over
a 56 Kbps dial link. Internally over my 10/100 Mbps LAN, however, video from my XP Pro desktop to my iPAQ 3835 is very
good.

Note that all calls I make are direct IP to IP.
