I've been successfully using the wifi link on my 5550 for LAN access for a while. I now want to try public wifi access. I've signed up with an ISP (BT Openzone) and have my user ID and password. Under Connections->settings->Configure Wireless networks, I've selected "All Available" networks to access and checked "Automatically connect to non-preferred networks". When I'm within range of a BT Openzone hotspot, it's name pops up in the list of available networks and after a few seconds I get a "connected" message. Also, the wifi led on the iPAQ changes from orange to green and the connection icon loses it's little cross. Great! All systems go! I go to the BT Openzone url to logon and get a "the page you are looking for cannot be found" message.
I mention BT Openzone because I've actually got an account set up. But the same happens with any public wifi ISP. The general instructions from all of them seem to be "just go to our url and type in your account details". In fact, they all claim the web page should pop up automatically on connection - which it doesn't.
What am I doing wrong? I'm obviously missing something in the process of configuring the iPAQ for public wifi access, but I can't fathom out what. My guess is it may have to do with the various security options. But I have tried all permutations, including nothing at all, and there seems to be no difference.
I've also doen a bit of troubleshooting and checked my IPconfig. I do appear to get an IP address issued when "connected" to one of these hotspots. So is there maybe some sort of DNS problem? I'm stumped.
