COMMENTARY — Although the idea that a personal digital assistant running Linux could provide the same functionality as a Windows CE or Pocket PC device at a significantly lower cost is attractive, fact is most costs come from hardware.
Microsoft and Palm both charge only $7 to $10 per operating system license for a PDA, so eliminating that cost by using Linux would affect pricing only at the extreme low end of the market (that is, PDAs priced under $100, which offer only the most basic functions and are unlikely to meet most companies’ requirements to support mobile workers).

mmO2 and Microsoft today announced plans to launch a package of new corporate services for use on a range of mobile devices over secure, high-speed GPRS mobile data networks. The agreement extends to all of mmO2’s mobile businesses in Europe, enabling its customers to roam and access information in the UK (BT Cellnet), Germany (VIAG Interkom), the Netherlands (Telfort Mobiel) and Ireland (Digifone).
The two companies, supported by their respective ISVs (independent solution vendors), channel partners and developers, will deliver commercial enterprise services from Spring 2002. I noticed an interesting thread over on Brighthand about Mr. Flash CF cards draining the battery faster than other brands. Supposedly Mr Flash CF cards continiously draw power from the unit even when not in use.
