Not PocketPC related but very interesting all the same.

“In a shocking announcement this morning, Palm has acquired Handspring. Handspring has been fighting for survival and Palm has been trying to keep a step ahead of Sony. Now they’ll fight together, the deal will be finalized this fall. The Palm board also gave the final approval for the PalmSource spin-off.”

The microsoft MVP (most valued professional) 2003 conference started yesterday. All the top people in the PocketPC world will be attending. I wish I could be there but unfortunately as of yet I am not an MVP.

Anyway hopefully we will get some news on the upcoming PocketPC 2003 operating system and all the other goodies microsoft has up their sleeves. :) —–

Jason Dunn (MVP + PocketPCthoughts.com owner) has been interviewed over at PocketPCsummit.

“PPCS: Who is Jason Dunn?

Jason Dunn: There are many ways I could answer that, but I’ll pick one: I’m a student of everything. I love learning new things, and strive to increase my knowledge every opportunity I get.

PPCS: What sparked your interest in handheld technology, specifically the Pocket PC?

JD: I like having access to information, so a PDA is a natural extension of my brain. I’ve never had the best memory, and a PDA helps me keep track of the things I need to do. As for the Pocket PC, it was a natural evolution - I started out with a Velo 1 HPC back in 1997, moved to a Palm-sized PC later on, and now the Pocket PC is the end result….”

Jared Miniman owner of pocketnow was at CES last week and learned an interesting piece of information.

“Throughout CES, I had my MVP hat on. When I had the chance to speak with a marketing guy who had a great deal of engineering expertise (gasp!!), I jumped at the opportunity to get my questions out. I spoke with a rep from SyChip, who are delivering Socket’s SD WiFi card to begin shipping in March (I assume most of this is under NDA). He delivered this gem of information:

1. Any XScale processor device will support SDIO without an on-SD-Card clock handler chip. Why? The PXA250 chipset has built-in support for 1-bit (SDIO) SD!

2. Any OMAP processor device will also support SDIO for the same reason. So . . . all the Smartphones announced so far with OMAP–you guessed it–can theoretically support SDIO.”

Now, this doesn’t mean you can stick an SD Bluetooth card in your HP iPAQ h1910, the drivers don’t exist yet, but if this info proves to be correct, it means it is just a matter of drivers being written.

Mobile users can play popular games for gold using Macromedia Flash

Popular online gaming site The Gold Casino today released the first version of their website specifically for Pocket PC gamers.

The site, which is now viewable on Pocket PC browsers at the casino’s standard URL (http://www.thegoldcasino.com), is aimed at users of the major gold-backed internet currencies, e-gold (http://www.e-gold.com) and GoldGrams (http://www.goldmoney.com). Using the Pocket PC’s built-in web browser, and the Flash plug-in from Macromedia, users can play their favorite casino games in an engaging animated format, and win real gold which may be cashed out immediately.

HOW FAST CAN YOU TYPE ON YOUR PALM?

You all know how difficult it is to get a fair comparison of
input methods. Any claim is likely to be dismissed as marketing
hype, as it may sometimes be the case. So the idea is to have a
contest where all participants can be measured on the same basis.

DOM PERIGNON II SPEED CONTEST

Just enter the following 40 words with the method of your
choice and record your time:

What you need to do to have a chance to win
the contest is to tap this sentence as fast as you
can without any error. One more thing you need
to have for a valid entry is a witness.

ACCEPTABLE INPUT METHODS ARE:

  • FitalyStamp, FitalyVirtual, or any Fitaly keyboard.
  • Any Palm keyboard using an overlay of the Graffiti area…
  • On-screen Keyboards activated by a pen.
  • Handwriting software such as Graffiti, Letter Recognizer…
  • Thumb boards: keyboards designed to be used with your thumbs.

Obviously, the use of Graffiti shortcuts is not allowed and
neither is the use of word or phrase completion capabilities.

The use of an attached full keyboard is not allowed since the
object of this contest is to compare input methods using pen
    input and thumb boards.

    For more information, visit:
    http://www.fitaly.com/domperignon/domperignon3.htm

    CONTEST AWARDS

The fastest entry in each category — Palm, Pocket PC, and Thumb —
will be awarded a prestigious bottle of Dom Perignon (the
earliest entry, in case of a tie).

The next 20 best entries get a free copy of FitalyStamp,
FitalyVirtual for the NR70, or the Fitaly Keyboard for the Pocket
    PC… winner’s choice.

Weekly Awards: At the end of each week — on Nov. 23 and 30, Dec.
7 and 14 — the 20 best entries for the week will be awarded a
    free copy of either of:

  • Wordsmith from Blue Nomad (10)
  • Quickbudget from Quick Sense (10)
  • pEditPro from Paulcomputing (10)
  • PocketInformant for the Pocket PC (15).
  • IA ScreenShot for the Pocket PC (20).
  • Premier Point Plus pen from ttools (5)
  • Fitaly product of your choice (10)

All participants will have made the demonstration that fast
text-entry is possible on a PDA!

    SUBMITTING ENTRIES

Contest entries should be posted on the Dom Perignon III Forum
established for the contest. The message title should start with
the Method & Time, expressed in hundredths of seconds.

    http://fitaly.com/board/domper3/index.html

To run the test, use the freeware word game FitalyLetris and submit
a gif image of your score sheet.

The contest ends on December 20, 2002. See the table of current
entries on the Dom Perignon forum.

That’s it: You have just about five weeks to show that the real purpose
of HotSync and ActiveSync is to transfer from the PDA to the PC!

ReefEdge Inc. is readying a wireless solution for carriers that want to offer WLAN services and IT managers who want assurances data is secure.

The Fort Lee, N.J., company this week will introduce ReefEdge SPS (Service Provider Solution), a combination of servers and controllers that supports wireless LANs and WANs and links them to enterprise security and management systems. Aimed at carriers, SPS is designed to help service providers persuade enterprise customers to use hot spots, or WLAN access in public places. “What we’re looking at is to go away from just raw consumer Internet access and position the hot spots as corporate remote access centers,” said Inder Gopal, CEO of ReefEdge….
