PocketPCthoughts reader Christian Torring has reviewed the new european Medion MDPPC 100 Pocket PC.

“This Pocket PC is interesting because it came on the market without any warning, and without any information available on the Internet.

Medion makes/sells computers and electronic hardware in Europe, and has a reputation of sticking their name on things they don’t produce themselves.

I had a hunch that this Pocket PC was identical to the Mitac Mio 338, and maybe also the Viewsonic v35 and Packard Bell PocketGear 2030. All these Pocket PCs look pretty much the same, and have roughly the same specifications, so I jumped at the opportunity to purchase this device at a very reduced price.

I am now nearly 100% certain that the Medion is identical to the Mitac Mio 338, and I think that Mitac has developed it, but I cannot prove this. If you compare the pictures of the Medion with the Mitac, you will see the striking resemblance, and some of the Medion’s bundled software has pictures of another Mitac PPC (the 558). After resetting, the PPC shows a Medion logo…..”

BargainPDA has a review on Viewsonic V35 Pocket PC. In the review, the author has several comments on the comparison between iPAQ 1910, Toshiba e310 & Dell Axims

“On today’s plate for review is the ViewSonic V35 Pocket PC. I’ve been playing with this for some time now and have been able to compare it to the Dell Axim X5, the HP iPaq 1910, Toshiba e310 and the HP iPaq 5450. On the whole I believe the ViewSonic V35 is a good device, but it struggles a bit to truly differentiate itself from the pack. Having said that though, the standout feature is the fact this device holds the distinction of being the lightest and thinnest Pocket PC available on the market while still being powered by a beefy 300 MHz XScale processor. My goal in this review is to get you acquainted with the V35 and reasons as to why it might be a better fit for your needs than one of the other comparable Pocket PC devices out there….”

New tool eases entry of data into Pocket Outlook applications

CHICAGO, Illinois (January 7, 2003) – A sales professional listens to his voicemail and jots down a new lead’s name, phone number, e-mail address and message. With a few taps, myWorkspace exports that information to the user’s Contacts database, add a reminder to follow up to his Tasks list, schedule an appointment and send a confirmation e-mail.

neohand, inc., a leading developer of productivity and lifestyle solutions for mobile devices, has released myWorkspace, a time-saving way to enter contact, appointment and task information onto Pocket PC handhelds.

The main engine of myWorkspace is its EZExportTM function, an automated process to add information easily and seamlessly to one or more internal databases. EZExport is executed from the startup form. There, the user enters basic information, such as a person’s name, phone number, e-mail address, when they contacted the user and what it was regarding. Then, the user selects any of four checkboxes that determine how the EZExport function processes that information. These options include the Tasks, Calendar and Contacts Pocket Outlook databases, as well as the processing of a confirmation e-mail.

In addition, myWorkspace includes the new EZText technology that allows users to create and edit templates to accelerate entering and formatting of data into the Pocket Outlook databases.

“myWorkspace makes it even easier to add data to the most frequently used Pocket Outlook applications,” says David Horwich, president and CEO of neohand, inc. “Both power and casual users will save minutes per day using myWorkspace’s EZExport and EZText technologies.”

myWorkspaceTM is priced at $24.95. The product is available through the neohand store at neohand.com/shop and through Handango, the leading destination for handheld software and accessories. The application runs on any Pocket PC-powered device running Microsoft’s Pocket PC version 2002 operating system. myWorkspace requires 497 kb of available RAM.

“Motherboard maker Asustek Computer plans to launch a smartphone in the second quarter of next year, joining High Tech Computer (HTC) and Compal Communications as the third Taiwanese company producing the mobile computing device. Its second own-brand Pocket PC will also be introduced in the same quarter.

The A710-codenamed PDA will feature GPRS and 802.11b wireless connectivity, according to the company. Its first own-brand Pocket PC, the MyPal A660, does not provide built-in wireless access.

The company aims to rank among the top three PDA vendors in Taiwan within two years.”

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (HGST), a new joint venture between IBM and Hitachi, today announced plans to squeeze four gigabytes of data onto the 1-inch Microdrive, known as the world’s smallest hard disk drive. With considerable advances in miniaturization technology thanks to the Pixie Dust concept originally developed by IBM, HGST engineers have overcome magnetic recording challenges associated with developing hard disk drives of this size, and expects the 4 GB Microdrive to be available in the Fall of 2003.
