PocketPCMag have a review of the new Dell Axim on their site. There is an extract below.

“I was quite impressed with the high-performance version of the Axim X5 that I reviewed. It’s not the smallest or lightest of the Pocket PCs reviewed in this issue. But it’s nice to look at, fits comfortably in your hand, and has a powerful Intel processor, two expansion slots, and replaceable batteries. It can hold its own against any of the top Pocket PCs available, and at $300, it costs about half the price of its competitors. I didn’t get a chance to look at the value version of the Axim X5. But the specs seem to indicate that it’s just about as good as the top-of-the-line model. “

“To avoid putting all its eggs in one basket, High Tech Computer (HTC), the world’s largest PDA maker, said it hopes to lower the proportion of revenues from its biggest client, Hewlett-Packard (HP), from the current 50%.

Company president H.T. Cho said that to diversify operating risk, it is necessary to expand its client base and avoid depending heavily on HP’s iPAQ orders. It is estimated that HTC will ship 1.5 million iPAQ Pocket PCs this year, making up 75% of the company’s full-year handheld device shipments.

Shipments of the iPAQ and HTC’s revenue performance have a close cause-and-effect relationship. It is estimated that HP shipped 480,000 iPAQs and HTC posted record revenues of NT$5.13 billion in the second quarter. In the third quarter, HP reported shipping 290,000 iPAQs, and HTC saw its revenue drop 12.6% quarter-on-quarter to NT$4.49 billion…”

Intel plans to raise prices for processors that contain flash memory technology by as much as 40 percent on Jan. 1 in response to increased demand.
The Santa Clara, Calif.-based chipmaker said Monday that demand for processors with flash memory–used to store information in handhelds, cell phones and other devices–is rising as equipment makers add new features, such as digital cameras and color screens. Intel spokesman Tom Beerman said the company plans to raise prices on Jan. 1.

High-performance flash chips that can store the most data will see prices jump around 40 percent, Beerman said. Yet the company expects price hikes ranging from 20 to 40 percent across the product line, he added.

The hikes are “driven primarily by demand for cell phones,” Beerman said. “There is supply, but it is tightening.”
