Taiwan’s First International Computer (FIC) will launch a handheld computer combining Microsoft’s Pocket PC 2002 software with built-in Bluetooth wireless connectivity, the company said on Thursday at the CeBIT trade show in Hannover, Germany. The decision is likely to mean price competition in the market for Pocket PC devices, while at the same time making Bluetooth more accessible to handheld users.

Gene Sheu, president of FIC’s Networking Information Group, said in a statement that the company has already seen strong advance orders from customers in Central America.

The device includes standard Pocket PC features, such 32MB of flash ROM and 64MB of SDRAM, a TFT LCD touch screen, Compact Flash and Secure Digital expansion slots, and a choice of Intel StrongARM or Xscale processors. The main innovation is built-in Bluetooth and infrared communications

“The Austin, Texas-based company announced Monday that it has developed a new technology that offers longer battery life and will cost less than current lithium-ion batteries.

In a nutshell, the company is replacing cobalt with phosphate as the cathode material in its lithium-ion batteries, allowing them to be more stable and less expensive, according to Valence Chief Executive and President Stephan Godevais.

Valence is calling the new technology Saphion, and devices using the battery technology are expected to hit the market as early as this spring. Godevais added that notebook manufacturers are likely to be the first to adopt the new battery technology.”

WHISP (Wireless Handheld Information Service Platform) is an advanced communication platform of a new generation. It fills the need for an efficient, robust and user friendly solution to built business to business or business to customer wireless mobile information services and applications. WHISP has been especially designed for PocketPC equiped with wireless access 802.11b. It enables to build applications with several hundred of users connected at the same time

Initial access to information is done by broadcasting in push mode when the user enters the coverage area of the WLAN. The user will browse the pages and shall later retrieve a specific information, by sending a connection request to a server (pull mode) in unicast mode or to a transaction server for database access. “RealNetworks said on Tuesday it plans to launch a version of its RealOne media player that will run on arch rival Microsoft’s pocket PC.

“That issue (a RealOne player for Microsoft Pocket PC 2002) we will address very soon. At a mobile show, CTIA, next week in Orlando Florida, I think you will see some announcements from us,” Chief Executive Rob Glaser told Reuters in an interview on the sidelines of the CeBIT electronics show here.

Seattle-based RealNetworks is expanding into new areas, such as powerful mobile phones and portable computers, from its base in personal computers (PCs), where it has been battling for dominance against Microsoft for many years”
